184 Planter Questions

New to the 184 Planters never saw one until today. Do they have some type of stand to hold them up when not attached to a tractor? Are they supposed to just sit on the wheel? What keeps them from falling over when you try to back into them and attach them? Also inside the hopper on this one I found the little rods pictured what purpose do they play? They don't look like they have ever been used.

Brandon:

I have no clue as I have never seen one before, but I do have the manual on the server - International 184 planter Unit 7-12-65

Not sure if that helps ... not sure what the wing and disc is for. Maybe Jim knows.

Wouldn't the wing and disc be a row marker?

I don't see the rods in the parts book, but I don't have the book showing the fertilizer attachment.

If it were mine, I would make a stand with some 2x4s laying flay to chock the press wheel and a couple of 4x4s to support the sword to keep it upright.

I have never seen a fert hopper on a one row planter. Only on 2 and 4 row ones.

Do you have a FU-1 parts book at work?

So how and where do those rods mount if they are row markers?

WOW ! What a find !!! I have a Fast Hitch 184 Planter too; in fact, I used it this week to plant corn and beans. Mine doesn't have the fertilizer hopper though. My 184 wants to tip over too, I just rest it against the wall and find it easier just to attach it by hand.
Just a guess, but those rods might be a stand, I have a 174 Planter with row markers and those rods are too short, and no way resemble those used on the 174 planter. What are the length of the rods you have ?
Keep looking, there might be a FH Harrow out there or a toolbar with depth wheels.

I'll have to measure them but that's the combo hopper lid laying beside them for reference to size. This piece pictured was on the pallet with the planter could it be a stand of some sort? Don't know if it's for a cub anybody seen anything like it?

I checked my IH parts catalog from the late 1950's and looked at both the 182 planter and the 184. Neither one showed the fertilizer hopper mounted in that arrangement, nor did it show those rods. ????

Did Boss Hog ever have a chance to look up the FH 184 planter at work ? I sure would like to know more about the two hopper arrangement and that possible stand.

Claude did not see anything in fertilizer book FU-1. He pointed out that it would be really hard to drive that hopper with the ground wheel only especially if the fertilizer was damp.

Paint appears original and it doesn't appear that it was added at a later date. It still has the decals down by the wheel. I can get some better pics but it all matches. I know nothing about these planters.

How did the larger 4 row planters drive the hoppers?

All the gearing looks factory and the hopper runs off the planter countershaft. Did all 184's have a long shaft with drive gear on both sides?
