cub transmission

My grandpa had a M with a M & W 9 speed kit that gave the operator more gears to chose from. I was curious if a kit like that had been available for the cub. A couple extra gears would be useful for a lot of things. But I could see there may not be room in the transmission for a kit like this. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

The only things I know of were the Howard Despeeder that was designed to give reduced speeds for their Rotavator, and the gear reducer for use with the trencher, also a specialty application item.

Some of the numbered series Cub Low-Boys have a creeper gear in front of the transmission. This provides the tractor with 6 speeds forward and 2 reverse. Problem is that the creeper gear on the numbered Cubs will not fit the standard Cubs.

If you are interested in spicing things up, Midwest Super Cub has gear sets from 20% underdrive to 47% overdrive http://midwestsupercub.net/MWSC%20Catalog.pdf (pages 55 & 56). These are made for Cub Cadet pulling tractors, however, they might be adaptable to the F-Cub. Some of the overdrives might be just what is needed to meet the speed requirements for tractor drives, however, ponies under the hood might be the next problem.

Some brilliant person here should be able to use all that space in the torque tube to put in a hi/lo gearset without going down to the creeper setup that the number loboys used. Ponies under the hood are fine if we just had more gear ratios available.
I'm still thinking about adapting my 300,000 mile iron duke for tractor duty...it's only an inch longer than the C60....

If I live long enough my 48 is going to become hydro-drive.---still need a few parts and some machine work to make things fit,--then we got some nice slow usable speed range from what the calculations that some of us have come up with. thanks; sonny

Yup, but torque may be a problem. those didn't have much torque till rpm got pretty high.

Don't forget, a hydro uses up a lot of horsepower, you may need a turbo charger to be able to do anything.

John!!! it will depend mostly upon what pump I can get by with--Then work up from there!LOL!---some pumps dont pull that hard and some would flat out kill the engine!---I need to do a little testing to get the right combo.!---tricky, but possible! thanks; sonny

Only thing about disrupting the driveline to the transmission is that you will affect PTO speed.

My 48 dont have a pto, so no problem there!---thats why I am trying to find some use for the tractor---its either make it usable or junk it! thanks; sonny

Image to what John said :!: That 48 would do nicely for my snowblower Cub, snow plow Cub or just pulling trailers... I can think of tons of uses for a Cub even without a PTO.
