Question about steering tightness

Postby pm_wells » Wed Apr 24, 2013 8:00 pm

While working on my cub, I took the steering gear housing and bolster apart. I took the gear out and cleaned everything up and installed new gaskets. After getting it all back together and back on the tractor the steering is really tight. My question is, could I have tightened the castle nut too much? Or will it free up after use? Thanks for advice.
Paul

Did you reinstall the original gasket on the steering rod bearing retainer or make a new one?

Raymond,
I made a new gasket and the material may have been a little thicker.

That is one of two gaskets that are thickness critical. Too thin and it will put the gears in a bind, too thick and it will add to slop.
I'd try to loosen the castle nut up a bit and see what happens, but not to the point of it allowing the pitman arm to move up and down.

It very well could be the thicker gasket. I will back the castle nut off and maybe that will free it up a little.
Thanks Raymond,and Arthur.

Paul, I would try loosening the steering rod bearing retainer bolts (easier to get to) and see if that helps and sometimes one notch on the castle nut is a bunch.
