A neighbor asked me to work on his cub last October. I told him that with my health problems I would when I felt like it, but it might take quite a while. He said it hadn't run right since he had it overhaulled about 4 or 5 years ago, so that was ok.

Among other things the valves needed lapped, adjusted, and 2 of them replaced. I had the front cover off the motor, and had a threaded rod and jam nut screwed into the crankshaft so I could turn the engine with a wrench. I had been working on it a while turning it as needed, when it slowly bound up. I looked it over, checked the gear shift, etc. and didn't find anything, but after I turned the engine back a little it was ok. Very curious.

Worked on it a little longer, and had the same thing happen. It would turn easy, then slowly start to bind. While checking it one more time I discovered my cane had fallen over against the tractor and the rubber grip was caught between the crankshaft gear and the governor idler. When I removed it all was ok, but it sure took a chunk out of the rubber handle of my cane. Guess I need to add another cane to the parts bill. LOL

Wonder if we should add this to the trouble shooting forum?

John:
My Compliments on your ability to grin! Especially at yourself.
You are such an asset to us as a model of how to keep the real important things in focus.
I truly believe in my signature block saying. The comfort level that comes with being that old is not all bad. Could do w/out the aches & pains, but as far as I know, it beats the alternative.
Did you check w/ our sponsers for used usable cane parts?
As a very nice lady used to tell me every night at work -"keep up the good work"
One of the few advantages of growing older is that I finally realized that I haven't made ALL the stupid mistakes! Yet!

A wise old gentleman once gave me 2 very good rules to live by.

1 - Don't sweat the small stuff.
2 - It's all small stuff.

PS. a "lady" in a Ford Excursion remodelded the rear end of my old Escort at a stop light yesterday.
2 good things about it.
1- no one was hurt
2 - Better an 11 year old Escort than my wifes 2005 focus or my 2001 4wd Ranger which is my tow vehicl.

Sent the link about adjusting the valves to the owner of the cub. He replied that in addition to adding a new cane to the parts list I should also include a pair of spectacles. Image

Oh make me laugh! Are you getting the 9x or 10x specs?? (I call em 'grampys')

As for the Escort.... hey they used to make em 3 shifts and the big guy only made one of you, so it all works out pretty good I suppose.

I got rear-ended in my old Dodge Shadow (Paid $1000 and drove it 6 years, it's still around) and thought it would be totaled when I got out to look.... not even a scratch. You know if was the high value vehicle it would have been a different story.

 TRUE STORY AND CONFESSION! I'm getting up there in years too. We went out to dinner with some friends not to long ago, sat down at the table and none of us could read the menus. All forgot our reading glasses.
I ran out to the local drug store and bought a pair.
Always try the easiest thing first.

Was at a Cracker Barrel one day when sitting across form me were 4 women in their late 50 or 60s all dressed up trying to impress everyone. One of them sittting on the end looked around to see if anyone was looking inad then held her menu at arms length below the table to read it. I almost went over and asked if she wanted me to hold it for her.
