NEW 1959 CUB
I PURCHASED MY FIRST CUB LAST MAY; A 1957 WITH FAST HITCH. AFTER ALMOST EIGHT MONTHS OF WORK WHICH INCLUDED AN ENGINE REBUILD AND LOTS OF OTHER ISSUES I DECIDED IT WAS TIME TO CELEBRATE AND BUY (CUBBY) A YOUNGER BROTHER . THAT IS HOW I EXPLAINED IT TO MY WIFE. ANYWAY, THE NEW ONE ARRIVED TODAY, A (LATE) 1959 W/O FAST HITCH THAT HAD SPENT MOST IF NOT ALL IT'S LIFE WITH A BELLY MOWER ATTACHED.
BEING A PERSON WHO LOVES RESTORATION ISSUES TO DEAL WITH; THIS ONE HAS SOME REAL OLD GAS AND NO DOUBT A VERY DIRTY CARB. AT LEAST THE ENGINE TURNS FREELY. GOD BLESS HE WHO DESIGNED THE UNDERSLUNG EXHAUST !

Have fun with your new Cub. Sometimes it amazing how little needs to be done to get them running again.

Re: NEW 1959 CUB
You are right about the underslung exhaust. I spent 8 weeks this winter getting a IH 656 diesel loose. It is a high clear utility which have a vertical exhaust and the previous owner did not have a flapper on the muffler. And the tractor apparently sat outside in the rain. I found a quart of water in the crankcase. A flapper works too.

Re: NEW 1959 CUB
Congrats on the new arrival.
My thoughts on the under-slung exhaust - when your hitching something up like a trailer or if the air is just right and your sitting on the seat idiling the exhaust can envelope you. There is no doubt the underslung exhaust gas saved more than one cub that's sat idle for a long period of time.
We use flappers on all of our Farmalls. My JD 5320 Diesel had the angle cutoff exhaust and water would still get into that - I cut it off flat and put a flapper on it.
Congrats again on your new Cub.

Re: NEW 1959 CUB
A rain cap should be the first thing bought when you get a tractor with a verticle exhaust, next is buy all three manuals for the tractor...Just my way of thinking...

Re: NEW 1959 CUB
Have fun with that new little Cub. I started out with just one and soon found another and then another caught my and so on to now I have 11 with a 12th pending. All run but 2 at the moment. I like getting them in rough shape, the challenge is to bring them back to life, No challenge, No fun to me. Plus the play time spent with one is no doubt priceless.
Enjoy your new toy and post a few pictures.

Have fun with your cub.
My dad used to put a coffee can over the vertical exhaust on our M and later the 400 if they were left outside. He called it "the garage." One time I forgot to take it off before starting, and almost got beaned as it came back down.

Re: NEW 1959 CUB
Hello everyone ! Thanks for all the kind remarks ! I have tried posting photos in the past using the Attachment option but I can never get past the box where you type in the information nor will it let me brouse. Sorry, don't know what I am doing wrong.
Worked on the 1959 tonight and got the carb off, the chock is stuck and it has been dry for years. Soaking in cleaner. It has about a 1/4 cup of old orange gas in the tank, but at least it keep the insides from getting rusty. Looks like the PO was good with checking the engine oil and radiator fluid, but not so good with hydraulic and transmission oil !
As soon as I get the deluxe seat cushion from the seller I can sit down and rest for awhile ! LOL
More fun ahead !
