corrected my seed tube issue

Postby clodhopper » Sun Mar 31, 2013 11:19 pm

After getting everything setup to plant for the first time, I find the rubber seed tubes I have are too short. They probably make a longer size, but wanting to solve the problem right away with material on hand, heres what I did. First, I removed my muffler and installed a piece of 1- 1/4 sch 40 pvc conduit in its place. This is my version of a redneck pipe bender.

Once the pipe is warmed to the point of being pliable, I bend it to the angle I want, between 22.5 and 45 degrees. It doesn't have to be exact. Also, wear gloves because the pipe is hot, and you need to be able to hold the angle you want until it cools.

Then I threaded it 1/4 20 so I could secure it to the runner with a bolt. Make sure the bolt DOES NOT PROTRUDE into the pipe. I also add a zip tie to secure the string tied on the rubber seed tube to hold it in place. Consequently, 1 1/4 is a perfect fit for the end of the rubber seed tube.

ANd here it is all finished. I planted some corn with it, and it works like a charm. Total cost? $0

This is the kind of stuff I love to do. Some people call it "rigging" or "jackleg". I call it creative value engineering. :D Life is all about perception!

...or as I call it, "seat of the pants engineering"! :) That's a great example of using what you have to create a simple and effective solution.
