Jim Becker wrote:The original paint on the radiators was pretty thin, so not much of an effect either way.

The radiators came into the factory with black paint. After the tractor was assembled, the whole thing was painted red (or yellow or . . .). No masking was done to keep paint off the radiator so they typically have a lot of overspray and are mostly the color of the tractor.

Most radiators are black. The color black radiates heat better than other colors (the darker color the better) when the heat source is internal, like a radiator. On the flip side black absorbs heat when the heat source is external, like a solar panel. Like Jim infers it probably doesn't make much difference, and a Cub usually doesn't run real hot anyway. The thin coat of black is by design to allow better heat transfer, Kens thinking is right on, and for that reason I wouldn't put a lot of paint on a radiator.

P.S. I've stored things I knew I'd need later so well I've never found them again!

The catch is that very little heat from a radiator goes away by radiation. They might more accurately be called conductors or even convectors. Heat gets from the engine to the radiator by convection of the coolant. Nearly all heat gets out of the radiator by conduction through the tubes and fins to the passing air. With the hood and all in place, most radiated heat transfer from the radiator is going to be more or less straight out the front. On a good warm day, the radiator might be at 200 degrees and the scenery out the front will be close to 100. That isn't enough temperature difference to move a lot of heat.

Re: My Restoration of Rex '48 - #21005 - Left Final Drive

Postby PVF1799 » Sun Aug 25, 2013 12:44 pm

Well - I tired everything to get 10 to 20 inch pounds of resistance with the outer lower seal NOT installed as specified by the service manual. I had a 3/4 drive breaker bar w/1.5" socket with it clamped in my press as shown. No way in heck I could put enough force on it to obtain that required drag. So I put her back together - The bottom portion is back together.

Yes - there were two shims and they went in exactly as they came out. They were wired together in the original order so I was sure not to lose anything. I was very careful when I seated everything - not sure why I have not achieved the results as called for in the service manual.

Well I'm back from NJ - Getting some shop time between calls today.

Yesterday I stopped by Cecil's on the way back from NJ - picked up the final drive I was supposed to pick-up at the Minifest. That will be disassembled and eTank over the weekend. Painted a few parts I primed before I went to NJ.

This is a used cover I got to replace the one so badly worn on Rex '48. The balance of the parts are all shiny red - ready to cure for assembly. The top of the shifter was VERY BADLY PITTED, under the knob, so I've just filled that with the second application of JB Weld to build it up to round again. Off to the shop again to polish up the original shift knob. Can't change it just yet - too much history and memories of all the hands that have shifted Rex '48 over the years.

Kept working on the left final drive today. Bit of a slow day - helping daughter move.

Had to make this purchase from Walmart today. Used it to heat the brake friction surface so it would go on the shaft easily. Saw this at Cecil's also - so I guess he cost me MORE $$$$ :D :D

Before heating the brake surface would NOT even start onto the shaft. I heated it in my oven to 350F and once I was really sure it was hot enough - I grabbed it with the ov'glove - and it pretty much dropped right over the shaft.

Big Day I think :DD
I believe I have pulled the last piece from the eTank, cleaned it, wire brushed it and primed it. :D
This is the replacement final drive I purchased because the brake pin was cracked out on the right side. I eTanked it, pulling it to rinse off once, then another 24h in the tank, follwed by a rinse, then Aircraft Remover, wire brushing, rinse with paint thinner - then primer.....So happy eTanking is done for this project.

I used my new oven to bake this bearing to 250F - Because it almost went on by hand, I did not take this one any hotter. It slide right on at 250F - when it cooled I put the snap ring retainer in.

The seat is curing. Pretty much the whole bottom of the seat looked like the mounting bracket. It was heavily pitted in spots. This was my first time using any sort of body filler - I'm pretty happy with the results.....It's not perfect, but I'll take it for my first one.

More Progress.

The right final drive is assembled as far as I can go till the o-ring arrives. Little story here - Perhaps one or more of you have done this. I nicely heated the bearing - had everything ready to assemble - the bearing dropped right on at 325F. That was awesome - too bad I had not put the spacer and shims behind it    - That bearing was not coming out - so back to the press she went. Heated the bearing the second time - being careful to no rush - PUT THE SPACER and SHIMS in while the bearing was heating. :D

The shift knob that I used as a kid was in pretty good shape - I decided to do the same repairs to it that I did with the steering wheel. Filled a few small cracks and a gouge that got there somehow. She's all painted w/gloss black and clear gloss. It was so shiny my iPhone would only focus on the reflection - sorry the one picture is blurry.

Got going on the torque tube and transmission.....It was cleaning job, I had put off for a VERY LONG TIME. Used Aircraft Remover, hand wire brush and my pump sprayer to wash down with mineral spirits. Then it was two different wire brushes in the right angle air grinder. This is as good as I can get it w/o e-tank or sand blasting. None of the residual paint is loose - so I'm gonna go with it. Trying to get it primed - BUT IT WON"T STOP RAINING. I'm keeping it moist with mineral spirits....so it does not rust. Told Pat - I need to bring it into her kitchen where the A/C is -that was flat out rejected :D :D :D as you might imagine.

Looking good Ken! Make sure you remove all the paint from the sealing surfaces before assembly!
Did you make any adjustments to the backlash of the rearend or is it going back together like it came apart?
