C-2 mower, easy question for someone that has one.

Made ya look! Actually I posed the same question on the other C-2 'bushing' thread, but thought I would run up my own flag.

The top pulley on mine has a good amount of up and down play, 1/2" or so. I assumed that it was a bearing, but it may merely be the clutch or just the design that allows that play. Anybody know if it is correct or not?? I really don't want to pull it apart if it is 'normal'.

Also, any tips on sharpening the blade?? If I can get it out I am sure I can get it sharpened, but there must be some tricks someone has that would be useful.

If it matters, it is under the Cub but not attached right now, the rear bracket is out at the moment and when I get a good day I will put the wire cup to it and paint her up.

With my mower attached, I'm always just loosened the round cover plate and dropped a pry bar to wedge the blade against while removing the cotter and castellated nut. Then just sharpened on the bench grinder. If you had a way to safely elevate the front of the tractor (ramps or such) you might be able to do it with a hand held grinder without removing them. Removing them is a nuisance, but it seems to get faster everytime. If you mark the bolt and nut with a line to show how the holes line up, then its easy to tighten it the right place and slip the cotter back in.

Another thing, when I asked the board about balancing the blades, I decided mine were pretty shot. With the new ones, all the vibration that had always been there, and I thought was normal, was gone. Bob

the vibration is caused by grinding more on one side than the other...an inexpensive blade balancer will do wonders for the vibration effect. i kick myself for not grabbing the one off grandad's power equipment shop[ when everything was being sold off. :cry: :roll:
