Early vs. Late Model Fast Hitch Lift Rods?

Postby jlmason81 » Sat Feb 09, 2013 10:39 pm

I am getting ready to mount a fast hitch on my 1975 Cub w/ IH 1000 Loader and noticed the lift rod that I have to use for it looks a bit different compared to the one on my 1977 International Cub. Did they make a early and late model lift rod? The one on my 1977 has the original paint that matches the tractor so I havent questioned its originality. It also has a different looking set collar as well. Any ideas????

Jeff, are the two the same diameter, one looks larger than the other, reason for my asking is the LoBoy has a larger diameter than the Regular Cub.

Jim,

You are correct they are different diameters. The one on the 1977 is a smaller diameter. The rusted one that I am trying to put on my 1975 is a bit larger diameter, same diameter as the one on my 1955 Lo Boy to be exact, but it doesnt have the bends in the same spot. If I measure from the outside of the rod to the first bend on my Lo Boy it is 5" and on the rusted yellow one it is 7-1/2". Then the second bend is at 12" from the first bend on each one. The Rod on my 1977 is close on the first bend but about 20" on the second one.

Is the Lo Boys Fast Hitch Lift Rod the same overall length?

Jeff;
I can't coment on the bends as mine have been broke and bent and re-welded so many times it isn't even close, I bought a new rod from Tim not knowing there was a difference, so when I went to install it the trunions wouldn't fit. The Loboy is 7/8 and the F-Cub is 3/4 as far as overall length I think they are the same.

Jeff-

The parts book only lists one lift rod per style (Loboy or Cub).

On all of the FH trunnion pieces on the loboys that I have, there looks to be play in the fit between the lift rod and trunnion when the 3/4" dia rod is installed.

Tim has done a lot of research and is very thorough on reproductions, so I would put a lot of weight behind his info.

Took some measurements of the units I have on hand, the Cub FH is a late style with hand crank depth adjustment.

Both bend dimensions are taken from the hydraulic end (i.e. not from one bend to the next if that makes sense).

I've never personally owned an early style FH for the Cub, maybe someone else can chime in.

Loboy
3/4" dia rod
54" straight line dimension
7" first bend
18" second bend

Loboy
7/8" dia rod
54" straight line dimension
7" first bend
18" second bend

Cub
3/4" dia rod
54" straight line dimension
6" first bend
28" second bend

Loboy w/ IH 1000 loader
7/8" dia rod (has a weld repair)
54" straight line dimension
6" first bend
19" second bend

Loboy w/ Wagner 45 loader
3/4" dia rod
54" straight line dimension
6" first bend
14" second bend

Here are my measurements. It sure seems that the Lift Rods are all over the place on the bend locations. I would like to verify that this is actually meant for the standard cub fast hitch before I restore and mount it. Any other opinions guys??

1955 Lo Boy
7/8" Rod
First Bend - 6"
Second Bend - 18"

1977 International Cub
3/4" Rod
First Bend - 6"
Second Bend - 30"

The One in Question
7/8" Rod
First Bend - 7"
Second Bend - 21"

Standard Cubs here: first bend about 5 or 6 inches, second 29 inches (measured from front of rod). One I checked was an original the other a TM repro.

Lo-Boys: A TM repro that seems to match up pretty well against a bend/welded original has bends at 7" and 22".

The difference between 29 and 22 makes sense as fenders are about 7" forward on a Lo-Boy.

The part numbers for the rod and trunion and the size of the hex nut are the same between the 1/56 parts catalog and 8/79 parts catalog. This is for both the standard cubs and the Lo-Boys. In the absence of any solid evidence otherwise, I assume that any 3/4 diameter rods on Lo-Boys came from somewhere else and that there were no noteworthy changes made to the rods over the years.
