First CUB and I got to plow snow today

Postby baldwindiesel » Mon Feb 04, 2013 11:37 pm

Today I plowed snow with my first CUB ever. It's an early 1957 with Fast Hitch. I actually bought this CUB in May, but wasn't able to pick it up until mid August. I'm in Ohio and it was in Pennsylvania. It came with five implements: 194 plow, C-22 Sickle bar, 144 cultivators, L-38F disc harrow, and a Fast Hitch Spring Harrow. It was a 4 1/2 hour drive home.
After I got it home I cleaned it up, drove it around some and showed a tractor friend my new toy. When I ran it wide open I realized that there was a knocking sound coming from the engine, but it was hard to tell exactly what I was hearing. Fearing that my new CUB could have a serious engine issue , (it did have great oil pressure, but smoked some), I hauled it to my nearest Farmall expert which happened to be the next county over. That was in mid September. He also farmed, so I was very patient; reading the Farmall Cub forum for the next four months !
The news wasn't good; the engine had been overhauled in the past, but the parts were not thoroughly cleaned; AND they had put the main bearing in backwards which scored the crankshaft. The piston rings were oversized, etc. So what to do,give up, or bite the bullet and go for a complete engine restoration (block dipped, head planned, new valves, new pistons, everything.) So, that is what I did.
I got it back yesterday, spent the evening wrestling with my 54 plow and finished putting it on at lunch today. Just in time to plow 5" of snow !!! Did I have fun ??? YES !
Oh; while I was waiting for the CUB's return I spent many evenings looking at Craig's list; and now the CUB has twelve implements to display and use.

Glad you got it back in time to have some real fun, but with all those implements it looks like you may have year round fun. We need to get you down here in the Cincinnati area for the Cubfest the end of May.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Thanks everyone for all the kind words and thoughts !!!!! It would be great to make a trip down to Cincinnati in May. I won't be able to bring the CUB as I only have a Ford Ranger to tow with.
I'm still trying to figure out how to post some photos ????????? When I do I will post some of the implements that I have restored as well. My intention is to restore the CUB and all the implements and display (at least some of them) at the local tractor shows.
The second longest CUB trip was down to Maysville,KY to pick up the 184 Fast Hitch planter ! A few months ago I added a 174 planter as well, I'm looking for some marker brackets to complete the restoration.
More than one CUB ??? That would be great ! Especially a nice white demo one.

After completing your snow plow jobs, it is a very good practice to put a wrench on all your plow fasteners. I suspect if the torqe tube bracket on the right side became loose, under the right conditions the torque tube could be broken.
