when you say a four position or a 3 position light switch does off count?

can someone send a picture of how to place the decal

A four postition switch has 3 clicks.

A three position switch has two clicks.

The first position counts.

On my cubs and in most pictures I have seen, the decal is placed along the left side of the switch. If the knob was the face of a clock, the position indicator on the knob would be in approx. the 8 o'clock position.

The "D" should be at about noon.

This might seem a silly question, but...

O= OFF

D= DIM

B= BRIGHT ????? Could it be that simple??

If I understand correctly, the "3" position switch has nothing to to with charge rate ?

Actually it's:
O - off
D= dim
B = less dim.

for the 4 postion it's:
L = low charge
H = high charge
D = dim
B = less dim

and yes you are correct, the 3 position does not control charge. the 3 position switch was used when the systems became equpped with voltage regualtor to control the charge rate.

I know what you mean about the "less dim" !!

I have the 6v lights. I would guess the 12v lights are much much brighter??

I wonder if you could find 3 or 4 volt bulbs and try those....they'd burn brighter for a while anyway!

Better yet....get your butt inside to see the better half when it gets dark !!!! Maybe that's why they aren't really bright enough to see what you are doing!!

The low output lights come from a couple reasons.
1 - the chargeing systems were at there limits with the supplied lights, and anything brighter the generators couldn't keep the battery charged.

2 - People weren't used to the bright head lights we have now. Most light outside the home (and sometimes inside it too) were from a kerosen lantern. There were no headlights on cars going by, streetlights, etc. Peoplw were used to the lower light levels. Our eyes were better then too. LOL

I know it's not relevant to this discussion, but my 12 v yeller one has a (new) 4 position switch. Need a fuse for the new fuse holder (and put the lights back together) before I can tell if it really works this way. But I am sure I wired the whole thing right.

The newer rotary switches also have a connection for instrument lights.... none on a Cub that I can see.

You mean that I have to turn on the switch to make it charge??? Duhh! That explains why my battery is dead. I just checked and I have a 4 position switch on my 47.

OK, just so I am clear. I need to turn it to on while I am mowing to charge my battery?

Just reread the post. If I understand correctly even with my switch all the way to the left I should be charging? I don't have a multi-meter. Mine just died and I need to replace it. Otherwise I could check it really easy.

It will only charge 1 to 2 amps in the L position.

Unless you run it a long time everyday, just leave it on high. It should charge about 5 to 10 amps then, depending on charge of battery and condition of generator.
