Farmall Cub

Is the choke rod supposed to stay out when you pull it or is it supposed to return on its spring? When I got this tractor ('58 LoBoy) the choke rod would stay out and you could set it at full or partly open choke. It stayed because of friction on the rod where it passed thru the hole in the dash. Last year after some repairs I thought it would be a good idea to "free it up". Now when I let go it returns by spring to the choke off position. This makes it so I have to sit there and hold it out til the engine warms and will run without choke.

None of the Cubs I have have a return spring on the choke. And, yes, a little friction on the choke rod is a good thing.

It should not have a spring on it. Never seen one that did.

It is supposed to stay out. There is no spring to return it. The choke is activated by pulling the rod out and pushing it in to release the choke:

If it has a return spring it is a Zenith carb. The spring was intended to make sure the choke was not left partly out for long periods, causing the engine to run rich while working. whether you want it to return on it's own or stay put is up to you.

Thanks to all of you for the advice. I will be trying to get my "friction back" so it will stay where I put it. This tractor does have the replacement carburetor and it does have a choke spring.

Mine (after a complete carb rebuild) doesnt even need the choke, even in the cold (cold here is 20F). I know, for you guys north of Mason Dixon,thats short sleeve weather.

Mine has the IH carb and has no return spring. It does have a detent spring on the choke shaft, so you can "feel" the choke is off, however it only works when operating the choke by hand at the carb (hand cranking). You cant feel it through the choke rod.
