I have a 172 planter with richmond type corn hopper. I'm looking to plant feed corn for deer food plots. I know there is a learning curve, trial and error, on matching seed plates to seed. Just looking for ideas on other peoples sucessful matches. I already have some plates for my sweet corn and am looking for plates for the feed corn so once spring is here I can hit the ground running.
Thanks, Kirk

If you are planting field corn the large plate will work fine I think it is # 1975 but will go look to make sure

I have a cast iron plate (1975-A) with a seed/cell size of extra small. I also have a cast iron plate (1978-A) for medium sized seed; and a cast iron plate (1979-A) for Large size seed. I can't confirm any of this information to be 100% accurate....it's just what I have noted from doing research myself in my spare time. Some of the information came from the IH manuals, some from the internet, and some of the information is came directly from the plate itself.

I also have some Lustran (plastic) plates (C-11) with 16 and 24 cells that are for "flat corn"; and the Lustran plates (C12) with 16 and 24 cells that are for "round" corn, For What it's Worth. The seed size for those plates are (38-13-20) and (41-21-20), respectively.

If you think the 1979A is a good fit for the larger standard field corn I'll look around for a couple. I already have the 1975 1977 and 1978 plates. Just trying to build a plate collection over the winter so as not to pay high spring prices and no matter what corn I get I'll have the plates.

Thanks, Kirk
