1951 farmall choke rod

Postby kylev » Sun Apr 24, 2005 9:09 pm

I have a 1951 farmall with a zenith carb. The choke rod is missing and I dont know what it looks like. The carb however has a little clamp that looks like it is made for a choke cable. It has the little clamp that would look to hold the outer sleve of a choke cable and a tiny hole that the inner of a typical choke cable "Z" would go in. Does anyone know anything about this. The carb might not even be the original that came on it. It may have been switched out which is why it might look like it needs a cable instead of a rod. On the other side I do have a starter rod.

Kyle, the Zenith carb is not original to your 51. If you want to use a choke rod with it you will have to make some modifications. some guys install a cable, some operate it from the ground. A couple of guys here on the forum fabricate levers that will allow you to use a rod.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

CHOKE RODS

Postby HART » Mon Apr 25, 2005 12:37 pm

I FIRST MADE A ROD OUT OF HEAVY, BUT BENDABLE, ROD. IT TENDED TO BIND UP OCCASIONALLY AND LEAVE CHOKE OPEN.MY WIFE NEVER GOT USED TO THIS SO... I TOOK OFF ROD AND RAN A HEAVY CORD(FROM A DRAPERY TRAVIS ROD ) AND TIED IT UP TO THE HYDRAULIC LIFT CONTROL. WE CAN ALL REACH IT EASILY AND THE CORD JUST HANGS LOOSELY AND NEVER BINDS.

I believe the choke shaft can be reversed putting the rod attachment to the inside. That will alleviate both problems.

You can switch the choke to the other side, Not too bad of a time either. I did mine.

Ok I like the rod Idea that the picture shows but dont like the idea of not being able to get to the oil.Does anyone know where I can find the rod that goes on a 51. I will try to flip it to the inside like the other guy said.
