Hi all,
Since Dave Becks post asking about the front cover required because his has broken "ears". I got to wondering, what seems to be the most common cause of the breakage?
Impact from a crash? tightening fan belt too tight? fan bearing fail?
I had to swap one out on my '67 Loboy to but I suspect that one was from an impact. Seems to be one of the weak spots on the cub that keeps coming up.

What breaks them?

I suspect most of them are broken from people trying to turn the nut instead of the shaft, or from the bolt being rusty, and not trying to help hold the nut when loosening the shaft. Have heard of one or two breaking whne a fan bearing went bad though.

If the nut is turned instead of the shaft it puts a fatal spreading force on the ears. Turning the nut seems natural, but it is what breaks them.

Mine broke when a storm hit and a soft maple about 40 ft. tall desided to go over with my cub parked along side.. Tiped the tractor over, bent the hood smashed the air cleaner, and broke the fan off the casting. We fixed it but the guy got the ear kroked so after finding this board I was finaly able to find a replacement. That was 4 years ago. Paid 55. pluss shipping then.

I forgot about that one. I do remember when I tried removing the fan from my "now departed, but happily busy" '44 A, I ran into the problem of "how did they get thing thng together, and how do I get it apart?" After a few tries, (I've even seen some where people have tried splitting the nut) I finally figured it out. Good thing too because I probably would have become a victim with the cub.
I'll throw a wrench into things again, mine was broken where the cover and "ears" portion meet. The actual "ears" were not broken in two. Plus, it happened while the tractor was running as evidenced by the gouge marks on the rad as a result of the fan contacting it.
