pto problem

Postby farmer.boy » Sun Apr 17, 2005 4:38 pm

Well I was using the belly mower the other day and it decided to start grinding and jumping out of gear. The shifter parts all looked good including the nub on the pivot. So I am a'feared of problems with the internal powered splined shaft. The parts manual and repair manual don't show much about that shaft. What keeps it from sliping forward away from the pto? Is it just the alignment with the differential gear or are there some shims? Can the shaft be removed or re-positioned by removing the transmission plate rear cover or do you have to split the tractor?
thanks
Stanley

The main transmision shaft is held in place by a bearing retianer on the fornt of the transmission. Have to get to it by splitting at the fornt of the tranny. A little play (about a 1/4 inch or so) is normal in the dhaft. more means there is a problem with the bearing retainer. They cna be instleed backward and aloow the shaft to move aobut an inch or so. PTO id jeld by a snap ring or bearing beiing stakaed to the dhaft at the rear plate.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
