Data plate rivets
I replaced, rather than repair, the steering housing on my '49 Cub , and in the process of removing the data plate to put on the "new" housing, I managed to fold/spindle/mutilate and/or loose, three of the four data plate rivets. Does anyone have, or know of, a source for these rivets?

Paul, call Bob Diener, phone304-599-4027. He makes reproduction data plates and should have rivets as well.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

These folks will have them over night from Atlanta, Ga. You need to know the size. You will get 100 in a box then share them.

I can do that. I have not measured the holes in the new-to-me casting yet, but what I order will be to fit the holes in that casting. I don't know if the holes in all the castings are the same size or not, or if what is in yours is the same. What I found on the McMaster-Carr site are plain rivets (soft steel and aluminum) , with either a round head, or universal head(kind of a flattened round head). There are also 2 types of drive screws, but the sizes are limited. They also have brass escutcheon pins, but at $22.40 a pound (about 856 pins), I won't be buying those. However, the one rivet I removed and managed not to loose, looks more like an escutcheon pin than a rivet. It is about 1/4 to 3/8 inch long, rounded head, and pointed on the end like a nail. It is slightly bent, so it appears it may have been just slightly longer than the depth of the hole, and the pointed end would help it bend, or upset, in the hole as it was seated, causing it deform and lock it's self in place. I don't know it the soft, plain rivets will do that or not, but I will find out

Paul,
I usually remove the plates when I re-paint a tractor. So far (knock on wood), I haven't lost a rivet and re-use them. If it helps, I just measured one and it is .117" dia and exactly .375 working length.

Thanks George. That is about what I found. A number 32 drill bit (.116) is a snug fit in all the holes of both castings. The holes are 1/2 deep. I measured two rivets (I found another) and they run from .114 - .117, but that may be because they are slightly deformed. The rivets and or drive screw from McMaster-Carr don't come in that diameter. They do have a couple of different drive screws made for a .116 pilot hole, but the OD of the screw is .135 and .138 . They are made for sheet metal, and that OD will cut into that, but I think that OD may be too big to cut into the casting. I guess I will go with an 1/8" diameter aluminum or brass rivet and enlarge the holes slightly. I will play with the old casting and try using a #31 bit (.120) and see if the 1/8" rivet can be seated, if not I will go to 1/8" hole and deform the working diameter of the rivet to make it a drive fit in the hole. Since IH made their own bolts, and liked to use odd length's (sell more bolts that way), they probably made the rivets also

We are a bit out in the forgotten part of France here, right out on the tip near Brest, the facilities and suppliers around here are very limited, any help you can get elsewhere is appreciated.
Rivets, whatever size, diameter etc will do, i'll make them fit so it looks a bit more original than the centre punched examples that are there! Thanks for your help, I'll send by address by Email

Pat,
I ship to France often. I don't know how difficult it is for you to get parts, but I will be glad to help. I have a Case/IH dealer close by. Planning a trip over sometimes this fall also.
