Broken Cast

Postby TheBeekeeper » Tue Apr 12, 2005 8:37 pm

Hi Everyone,

My first post! I purchased my second cub late last year. My first was really my grandfather's which I drove around all the time as a kid. Well to make a long story short the new cub was rebuilt prior to my purchase. Its in pretty good shape with just a few issues that I am resolving. One thing I didn't notice when I purchased it was this:

Luckily I don't have any implements that mount here. Should I have any concerns? What implements actually mount here? How hard would it be for someone to actually weld a fix in place?

Thanks
1950 Cub

Beekeeper, I wouldn't even begin to consider a weld repair on that casting. They are plentiful and reasonable in cost. Labor - wise, you would not have much more time in replacing the casting than in trying to get a proper weld done. Even welded, the casting would never be as strong as original.

This one is within very reasonable distance from you... and the price so far is great!

broken casting

Postby ibrakeforrust » Wed Apr 13, 2005 10:30 pm

Beekeeper,
to answer your question of what mounts here, if you have a manual master control instead of touch control, the left bracket for the front rockshaft mounts in the broken hole. As far as I know, this is its only use, so if you have a touch control, don't worry about it. I have a planter, moldboard plow cultivatior, mower, middlebuster and none of these use this hole. Take a look at the Cub-144 manual page 14 illustration 12 to see a good pictoral of what I am saying. It would be quite a job to replace the bell housing for a hole that you may not need.

Looks to me like that casting took a hit from the inside of the housing, or someone had a way too long bolt in there it got wacked by the stuff in there, and broke out the corner. Have you rotated the crankshaft to have a look through the hole for scuff marks?

I have a torque tube I will let you have for FREE. If you want it. Maybe some of these guys could get it to you. If you know anyone in Oklahoma I could drop it off to them. I know there will be a couple of guys coming through here for CUBARAMA later this summer.
If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use duct tape.

BeeKeeper:

Sorry for not posting earlier -- cold and flu season is once again upon us  :!:

Anyways, just wanted to welcome to the greatest forum on the internet, and to the Cub Family. You will find that all the folks on this forum are kind, helpful and just full of Cub info and knowledge. They also happen to be the finest folks I have ever met :!: :D You are already seeing that :!:

Here is my usual welcome thingy:

Ok, so here is the spiel.

I would suggest that you read this thread: New Members and Visitors, Please READ. There are many great links to informative pages such as the ATIS FAQ's (both 1 and 2), The Best of H.L. Chauvin who has written very interesting articles on troubleshooting common problems with your Cub.

Also, you might want to visit the Cub Manual Server as there is tons of info on servicing, maintaining and re-building your Cub.

I would also recommend that you visit Binder Books and purchase the Owner's Manual, the GSS-1411 Service Manual and the TC-37F Parts Manual. Although they are available on the server, it is better is you also have your own paper copy. Binder Books is the only licensed IH publication reprint shop and they have the best quality.

I truly hope that you enjoy your Cub and that you will be a frequent contributor to the forum. Again, welcome to the Cub Family :D

I was really surprised to see that casting :!:  Never saw one like that. Even Jethro in the shape he was in didn't have that kind of damage.. :? Glad that you may have found a replacement. If it doesn't pan out, then the Fourum Sponsors would be a great place to start and also don't forget the For Sale/Wanted Forum.

Post a lot, with pics :!:  Welcome aboard :!: :!:
