pto output shaft

replacing the pto out put shaft bearing and seal i used napa cross referance parts the seal is much thinner,i was wondering if this is new and inproved or just cheaper does anyone have any idea thanks alot as always and have a great weekend

Some of the guys double up on those thinner seals. At the least, you have a choice where you seat the seal so you can make sure it rides on an un-worn area of the shaft.

Many of the new seals are thinner than the old ones, which is good if you have a wear groove, it allows you to seat it so it runs in a new place as BD stated. Unless the inner seal is leaking to start with, I question whether anything is gained by installing 2 seals, since the outer one will wear out very quickly from running dry. The continous splash of oil lubricates the seal lip the same as it does the gears and bearings.

I agree with John. I see little value in adding a second seal.

I would install the new seal flush with the outside face of the housing when applicable, setting if farther in only as needed to get the lip on a good surface.
