Hello gang,
I have a question about primer used on a '49 cub. I got around to pressure washing it over the weekend and I see white paint on most of the castings where I blew the old red off. The s/n is 89665 and according to the listings I have seen here and elsewhere, it is a '49. Am I right to assume that it is white primer?? Thanks.

It's too early to be a demonstrator... at least a legitimate one. That doesn't mean that someone in the last 55 years didn't try to fake it.
Give or take a very few numbers the first demonstrator is believed to be #99536. There shouldn't be many (if any) castings with a casting code before very late 1949.
Bill is right... the factory didn't use primer, except for the glyptol sealer on many castings.

IH never used primer until the 60s.
Someone probably just used primer at one time in it's 50+ years.

If the tractor is a White demonstrator the casting codes will range between late 1949 (S) and early 1950 (T).
Most casting codes on a tractor should only have a range of about 6 months but of course there are some exceptions.

Of course that's true. If so, the casting codes on the other castings will confirm this. Given that this may the case, would anyone really to want to restore it as a demonstrator carrying an invalid serial number? I wouldn't.
