When I drained the motor oil out of Missy today I noticed it ran a little slow and when I looked I could see something partially blocking the drain hole. After working with a wire a couple minutes I fished this out. At first I thought it was a bolt head, but after cleaning the oil off I see it's made out of a layer of hard rubber and a very thin layer of some grey plastic similar to JB Weld, then another layer of rubber. I don't know of anything made of rubber in the cub engine. Does anyone have an idea?

Maybe its like Steve said, some old gasket material. It might have some old type sealant stuck to it. Put it in a jar. I would think its not that major since I cant make out a serial number or casting date stamped anywhere on it! :D

Way too thick to be gasket material, and I can see to layers of each material. I am wondering if it is some kind of plug the machine shop used flushing it out that got left in.

John, that wasn't in the oil pan when I put Missy together. Is it small enough to pass through the oil passages?

Bud. Could it have been some part of a material that you used to block the passage ways under the valves to prevent lose of the spring seat keys??

After looking it over and thinking about it awhile I suspect it may be a bumper or foot off some of the machine shop equipment that may have broken off an became lodged in the lower part of the block. It's way to big to have gone through the oil passages, I barely got it out the drain hole. Before I cleaned the oil off I first thought it was the head off a beraing cap bolt.

Machine shop didn't have any ideas, but looking at it under a magnifying glass it appears to have been whittled down with a knife ro something similar. I am beginning to wonder if it may have come off a piece of equipment at the plant where the oil was bottled and an employee with very little to do whittled it down enough he could drop it in an oil bottle.

Funny you should say that John. I was just thinking a similar thing only it cane from some sort of hose in the bottling machinery. Do you get your oil in larger than Quart jugs? If you barely got it out the drain hole It probably didnot come in a quart unless the rubber really swelled from the oil.

Actually the inner lip of the drain on the early models and the diameter of an oil bottle are not much different. i checked and it will drop through the neck of a quart oil bottle.
