Making a bent shifter for deluxe seat

Postby Bob McCarty » Sat Mar 26, 2005 4:03 pm

When and if I find a deluxe seat I want to pay for, can I just heat and bend my straight shifter? Or is there something else different about the bent one? Thanks, Bob

You can bend your straight one. I always thought a custom "S" bend would be cool.

You can bend a straight one but it won't work very well because it is free to turn.

There is a pin in the bent ones that keeps them from turning. Depending on how long your legs are, you may like the seat mounted back about 2 1/2" and the straight shifter would work. I'm 6' and I prefer the seat set back and was considering switching to a straight shifter, which I like better.

I moved my seat back too and its a lot better. Where its at now it looks like a strait shifter would fit with just a little bend. Might put the gas hachet to it and straiten mine out some. But I'll have to think about weather I want it non stock or more comfortable :?:

Cowboy -
You will qualify as a 'Coot' [or as 'grown up'] when there is no longer a competition between 'comfort' and 'correct'
'Correct' wins all ties!
One of the few advantages of growing older is that I finally realized that I haven't made ALL the stupid mistakes! Yet!

I must have passed Coot and become Geeezer, because for me comfort wins under all circumstances. LOL

Oh boy, Larry had me convinced to leave it alone. Now John has me going the other way agin. Once more confused in Michigan. I'll wait till I get it back together sit on it and see how it feels and decide. Right now their are too many parts on the floorbord and seat to get on it.

You can just buy a bent shifter from any of the numbered series cub cadet lawn mover. I used the shifter from my 104 cub cadet on my F-cub before.

One detail I forgot about when suggesting moving the seat. My '63 has a longer steering shaft, so the steering wheel is farther back. Maybe that's why it seems better to have the seat farther back.

Note the extra distance between the support and the steering wheel hub.
