FYI 2150 paint

Postby Paul Stav » Tue Mar 22, 2005 12:35 pm

For years I have read posts on this and other websites concerning 2150 paint, what kind it is, proper reducer, hardener, etc. I have recently talked with a rep of Valspar (the maker) and am passing on the following:

2150 is and has been for many years an alkyd enamel, also known in the paint industry as a synthetic enamel. It should be treated as such, this means using a synthetic enamel reducer and hardener. Various posts have testimony by people who have stated that they use acrylic enamel reducer and hardener. This is not recommended. The can does say "acrylic modified", but it is still an alkyd enamel.

The easy way to keep from having a problem is to use IH/Case reducer and recently available hardener (part # REN-3001).

In the past, I have used a NAPA (Martin Senour) reducer product called Synthol 8005 and hardener MSE 375, both are compatable. Also, Dupont Nason makes a synthetic hardener 483-08.

Thanks for the info. I painted my H last week and used a laquer thinner instead of a reducer and also used a hardner. One thing that I did notice is it seems to chip rather easily, maybe it has to 'harden" for another week or two. Will take your advice when I paint the Super C.
My dad once told me if it wasn't for bad luck......I wouldn't have any luck at all......
