Cub tires-what size?

Postby Paul Stav » Mon Mar 14, 2005 9:50 pm

My 52 cub has 8x24 rear tires. Did all cubs come out with the same size tires? My rims are pretty bad and I have some 9 x 24 rims and tires that came off of a combine that I could modify to work, but I'm afraid the tires would look a little big. Were there any with larger tires?

Cubs came with sizes from 6-24 to 9.5-24. All sizes from 6 to 9 in the old marking system were used before the new markings came out.

Mike,

They're the same size... it's the markings that differ. They changed where they measure them later. I think the earlier standard was more accurate, since it wasn't affected as much by the rim width. Most Cubs came with 8 x 24 on 7" rims.

The 8 x 24 was measured at the tread width and the 8.3 x 24 was measured at the widest point of the sidewall.

My demonstrator has the original 7 x 24's on it... on 7" rims... no bulge at all. One of my Cubs has 9.5 x 24 tires on 6" rims... now they do look goofy. Maybe some day I can swap some tires. These 9.5's are new.

In '47, 6, 7 and 8 were available with 6 nominally standard.

tire and rim sizes

Postby Paul Stav » Tue Mar 15, 2005 8:32 pm

OK, I appreciate the variety of answers to my original question, and it looks like if I put 9.5x24 tires on my old 8 inch (I measured) rims, they would look alright. Now, I have some rims that measure 9 inches that I could make work. Did IH ever use a rim this wide? An example would be the 9.5 tire on a 9 inch rim.

Where are you measuring? The widest IH supplied were 7" for the 8 and 9 inch tires.

Didn't I see in an ad where Miller Tire now has 7-24 tires for sale for the cubs :?:

Bud, I was looking on Miller's website yesterday and today but didn't see anything on sale :( :(

I would like to find an original looking replacement set of tires for 563. The circle cub manuals show what looks like the tires in George's picture as far as tread design.

Is that tread design available (8 or 8.3 either one)? All I can see for the Cubs are the Firestone Traction Field & Road 8.3 X 24. Its close, but not the same. Firestones don't have the continuous unbroken rib?
