Touch Conrol Overhaul

Postby Bamacub » Mon Mar 07, 2005 7:17 pm

I have the service package & the unit is cleaned on the outside. I have never been inside one of these units before. Any suggestions with tips or help would be appreciated. The blue ribbon manual sez to use a good grade of light cup grease when installing "O" rings. Is light cup grease white lube? Thanks again for any help.

The manual you are reading was probably written while thye were still using motor oil in the TC unit. Cup grease was what is now used in grease guns to lube bearings. The manual I have calls for lubing the O'rings with Hyran.

Funny, I was just looking at the service manual today I saw the same thing.

Never heard of 'cup grease' either, but it is in the latest version of the service manual.

I often mis-spell cub, cup so there may be a special CUB grease?

Bama,

I've had the pleasure of doing 2 of these units. It's not a real hard job. Have a nice clean work area. I took each part out and laid on a big piece of paper, marking down what each piece is, what hole it goes back in and it's orientation. Some parts are tricky to get out, you may have to use snap ring pliers and a bit of twisting action. Follow your manual, and before you know it , you will be done . Good luck

the term cup grease comes from the way old equipment was greased. Instead of a zerk fitting as we are now used too, there was a fitting that screwed into a hole over the bearing (like a zerk does). A threaded "cup" was filled with grease and screwed onto the fitting. Every so often you screwed it down a little more to push more grease into the bearing. What used to be called cup grease is now called gun grease (same function, just applied a different way). Most of the time we just say grease, but there are different types of grease depending on the intended application.

Does that have any thing to do with being in your cups?
