Heavy Smoker

Postby Rick Prentice » Thu Mar 03, 2005 7:26 pm

My '48 Cub(Floyd) that I'm planning on tearing apart and giving a makeover is the best of all my stock Cubs as far as sheet metal and overall condition, but within about 3 minutes running time, starts to smoke out the exhaust. Floyd was the previous owner of this '48 and claimed he had over $900.00 stuck into the engine before he had his stroke. He said everything inside is new. When I told him I was planning on tearing the engine apart because of it smoking so bad, I don't think he believed me. This tractor has sat in a garage for the last 6 or 7 years. When I bought the tractor, Floyd started it in two cranks. He never used the starter because it always started so good for him.

Any suggestions on a probable cause? I'm hoping Floyd wasn't ripped off by the I.H.mechanic who did the work. Guess I'll find out when it's apart. I've changed the oil and filter and put the recommended oil in it, no change.

Thanks, Rick

Probably stuck rings from setting. Might try going to an auto parts store and getting some Sea foam. Put some in the gas and some in the oil and work it a little. Pouring a little Kroil (here comes Country) or Marvel Mystery Oil in each cylinder and letting it set a while may also help.

I'd make sure the crankcase is breathin well. I know someone ( yrs ago ) who rebuilt an engine that used alot of oil only to have it doin the same thing after rebuild. That's when they discovered a plugged pvc valve. $1.98 would have fixed it instead of $600.00.

Thanks for all the replies. I've been looking for a reason to order some Kroil, now I have one. I'll keep looking for some Seafoam too. It just bugs me on how rings could stick if the proper job was done during the rebuild. I can see it, if the glands were not cleaned before the new rings were installed, but if everything was properly cleaned, how could new oil gum up from setting. I know Floyd maybe put 5 hours on the Cub in the last 10 years. He had a small garden and that's all he used it for, the one bottom plow. I guess it doesn't matter as long as I can fix the problem.

Thanks again, Rick

Our O'Reilly store carries Seafoam. I added some to my Cub oil and gas a couple of weeks ago. Running smoother now. You might try an O'Reillys if there is one near you. Dan

I believe these engines run cold and that helps the carbon build up around the rings. If Floyd only ran the cub in cool weather and then it sat till you bought it the rings could be stuck.
I always try to get the temp up during cold season by blocking off the grill.
Seafoam is good stuff. I add it to the gas all year. Solved my water in the carb problem that plaqued me for years.

I would not suspect the oil to have the rings gummed up so much as mild rust since it was never run and has been setting for several years.

Well, I just got off the phone with Kanolabs. I ordered the gallon can and the applicator. I mentioned Country's name and got a "Who's that", so that was my chuckle for the day. Now I'm heading for a Napa to find some Seafoam hopefully. John, I never thought about rust causing the problem, makes sense. Thanks Guys, Rick

It's not uncommon for a rebuild or overhal to smoke, espescially if not used much, Use light weight oil and the above mention and try to drive or run it every day for a week or two. I bet it will clear up. Just sat to long. "Jack"
