Cub Sputters with Load

Postby David » Tue Mar 01, 2005 9:39 am

Hi all:

My cub runs fine on all power settings with no load. However, at high power settings, with load it sputters badly, sometimes even stalling. Example: I am at high power, and release the clutch too quickly. It sputters. Also, when pushing snow around, sputters.

I am wondering if it is the float setting in the carb? The reason is that I rebuilt the carb about a year ago, and reset the float, so that I would not get as much fuel (I was having problems starting, and thought the cause was too much fuel). When I worked out the problem was not fuel, I did bend back the float, but I am wondering if I have not bent it back enough. I don't have a fuel filter like some people have got (apart from the sediment bowl).

ANy suggestions?

David, If you look on Rudi's manual site you will find a lot of carb information. Invest a couple of bucks in the fitting and some clear plastic tubing and verify and adjust if necessary the float setting. You should also remove and clean the main jet to make sure it is not partially obstructed. One other thing would be to verify that you have a bright bluish white spark at the plug wires. Once all of that is done, re-check the timing.

I agree with Bigdog

Check that spark. My ford exploder had a bad wire and every time I stepped on it it would start missing.

I had a similar problem and found that the butterfly was hitting the intake when the governor called for more fuel. (Zenith). I douc=bled the gasket and all is well now. Might be a long shot, but just another avenue to explore.

I was pushing snow yesterday enjoying the hydraulic angle on the blade. My cub started acting like yours. Knew it had to be a gas problem and took the sediment bowl off and tried to clean it in the drive and froze my hands. When I finally got it on right and turned to gas back on it did not want to fill very quickly. Loosened the gas cap and it flowed. Have had the Cub in a warm garage and must have had some water in the vent holes that froze. Warmed the cap and blew out the holes. Then everything was fine and I was out braving the elements again. David, they are in the cap itself.

David...The breather holes in the original Cub gas cap can be seen when you take the cap off...turn it upside down...and you'll see two channels that are opposit each other :D . They run up to the center hole in the top of the gas cap  .

Be sure these are clean and OPEN. You can blow air into them from the top down. I use a small, basketball filler stem on an air pump  . Placed through the top hole, and just a pump or two and any blockage is forced out the bottom holes  .

You might want to try adding some Seafoam to your gas :D . Running that through your carb will unclog and clean your jets and ports too!

David: You should be able to get Seafoam from an auto parts store. In our town, O'Reilly Auto Parts carries this product. I am a new user and have had positive results by adding it to both fuel and oil. Dan
