Silver(?) paint for rear rims, suggestions or advise

Postby Buzzard Wing » Wed Feb 09, 2005 10:58 pm

I broke down and had the rear rims sandblasted. I have promptly primed them and now I am trying to figure out what to topcoat them with.
I only had the outsides blasted, the tires are still on the rims.

Just wondering if ya'll have any suggestions.

Thanks

B.W.

I did mine with cold galvanizing compond and I like the way they turned out.

I have seen many people paint them with silver and aluminum paint. All look very nice when finished. I am not really sure if they were painted in the beginning or a light coat of hot dipped galvanizing.

I too sandblasted my rear rims, but only the outside of one of them, since it had almost a new tire on it and since the tires were never filled with calcium chloride. I figured there was no sense in paying to dismount the tire. Well after I had the wheel with the original tire dismounted, the rim was just about like new on the inside. So I felt a lot better about my decision on not taking off the other almost new tire.

Here's the thread from last weekend, where I posted a picture of mine where you can see about what the cold galvanizing looks like.

I found a little trick too. Before you paint your rims, put on some vasoline or something similar on the tire for any overspary. Then after the paint is dry, wipe it all off. This worked real well for me.

When Cub-bud did Missy for me, he used IH Argeant silver, and I like it so well I even repainted the wheels on my cub hauler trailer with it.

Isn't if funny how we get to like something like this paint and want to use it on everything? That's why I want to paint the bed on my 54 with the IH 2150 paint, I just love that color, :D BTW, the rims looks really nice too!

You speaking of CubBud, I wonder where had he been lately? I haven't seen a post from him in a while.or maybe I just overlooked them too. I hope everything is ok with him and his family.

Hey I have tired calling that gentleman on them ramps and your RIGHT, he's always gone, but I'll keep trying. I wonder if he has an email address?

I can't remember the paint number but if you have an Auto Zone parts store near you they have a good silver wheel paint in a spray can. It is really close to the original color.
Always try the easiest thing first.

I've always use Silver Metalic on my rims, Rather pricey but it looks good. I have that galvinized gain bin paint on one tractor now and don't really like it so I'm thinking of repainting them.

The silver looks real sharp though.

Those are SHARP looking rims!! And that is one fine looking tractor too.

Wish I had known about the IH paint because I have an order on the way here now and I should be able to get paint for the price of shipping.

I have enough going on that I can afford to wait to paint the wheels.

Wish I still had a decent web design program, I would show you how Ol' Yeller is progressing. Tonight is front hubs (one side ready for the new bearings, clean/repack the other side) and the initial dunk of the carb.

I painted those wheels last Spring.

Try calling him about 6 am, he's an early riser. Or late of an evening, about 8 or 9. that's his home phone.

What do you like to use for primer for the IH silver paint? I bought the paint last time I was there, forgot the primer? Really hate to make a trip back to the dealer just for the primer.

Al:

Dupont Centari reducer and catalyst (hardener) are used with 2150, so any good primer such as Durabild will be fine.

Finally figured out a way to throw some pictures on the web...

Certainly not my best effort.... but sometimes you have to make due with the tools at hand. I reduced all the photos because I was trying to make due without Front Page or another html editor, so I used WORD. Doesn't make for efficient loading of pages, but seems to work.

http://mysite.verizon.net/lr. /

I used Rustoleum white liquid primer and a brush. Not the best, but it should hold up better than the spray primer I have been using.

Good to hear that everything was fine down your way Cub-Bud. It's funny when you don't see the regular guys posting every day, ya think there might be something wrong, which I am sure glad there wasn't. :)

Probably 50 of the new post you saw was from me, with my (BLANK BLANK) Cub problem. I am about to.............WELL, NEVER MIND :!:
