Tune-up frequency

Postby Slappy » Tue Jan 18, 2005 3:22 pm

Just finished a tune-up and fluid change on the Cub. It was running very well (better than it ever has), but it has been about a year and a half since the first full tune-up. We've used the little tractor hard this year mowing and pulling trees and debris to the burn pile following Hurricane Ivan. Even so, the points looked good with no pitting or burning and the plugs were in good shape. Still I replace the points and condenser and sandblasted the plug tips and re-set the gap. If the tractor is running good, what do you guys (how often or after how many hours) recommend for tune-up intervals?
A kick in the pants is still a step forward.

I tune mine up every 10 years whether it needs it or not. Seriously that is probalby one of the things I have been neglectful of over the years, and tended to do a tune up when I noticed a problem. Now that I have more time it will get done every couple years.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Tune Up

Postby Eugene » Wed Jan 19, 2005 1:06 am

I usually wait until I notice a loss of power - miss - tractor not running right to do a tune up. Guess - 2 or 3 years. Fluid change, once a year - usually spring - most of my tractors are lightly used. Lub job, daily when mowing but at least once a month during operating season - about 3 times a year.

I think it really depends on the USE more than anything :D ...It sounds like you used your Cub a LOT over the year  ...so I believe that an OIL CHANGE was in order (with NEW filter) along with the tune-up work you performed.

I'm personally NOT a believer in sand blasting plug tips  . For the fews bucks it costs you for 4 NEW ones...I believe it's a CHEAP investment  !

 I like to add LUCAS oil additive (mixed on an 80% oil+20% LUCAS) every time I change the oil in any of my tractors (AND my 1930 Ford Model A street rod). It's available at nearly every auto parts store (NAPA, ADVANCE, etc.) :D

I usually take care of things when I get around to it, On the rainy days or what not. Or I will do it when something goes wrong and I have to fix it, then while it is down for maintenance, I will tune it up and give it the once over.

Mike........ a tune up is like an overhaul, except that you don't apply paint or new decals....
