Quality Radiator ?

Finally got that new computerand am back on line. Using my sisters machine with my neice and nephew pulling on me wanting to play. Or using my friends aol that would not let me post just did'nt get it Shure missed my cub family and am glad to be back. Felt like loosing my left hand (ps I'm left handed). Not being to everyones advice. Or daily dose of humor.

Well I would like to hear about the quality of radiators out there. I have seen some on e-bay for $85. And my IH dealer was $130 but back ordered. I have a '64 cub and do not feel like spending money on junk.
Also my IH dealer was unable to get me a std thrust bearing for my crankshaft he did not list a part# for it although I was able to get the other bearings. Any ideas on where to get one
I pulled the head and oil pan with out splitting the tractor. Can I get to oil pump gears like this? I have good oil presure when cold or running over idle but at idle it drops and barly twiches.

I'm using an eBay special. The bottom flange is decidely thinner than the original unit I removed, but it's been holding up just fine, it seals to the top of the bolster and the gaskets are good - plus there's no real pressure to the system, just some heat. No leaks and everything seems to be OK after several months of use.

I think the IH Cub radiators are closer to $325

The cheaper ones..about $130... I have seen are paper thin but are ok for most. If you're not in too bad of shape, a good radiator shop might be your best bet

Thanks for the reply. It lookes to me someone had droped somthing on the top of the radiator. The cap was bent down and back so it hit the hood. I put a pipe into it and straitened it out. When I went to resolder it big pieces of solder droped out leving two cracks 3/8" wide by 3" long. I ended up coating them with JB weld and that has held up. I straitened up the fins but they are not even from one side to the other originally and are somewhat rotted. As all of us my cub is important to me and I want to do the best to it as I can afford.

I have bought and used three of the $95.00 chinese-made radiators....so far, so good.

You will not be able to access the oil pump and/or gears until you split the tractor at the block and torque tube and remove the clutch pressure plate and flywheel.

You should be able to get all the main bearings for the cub engine from the dealer. Give Bermuda Ken (Ken Updike) a call at http://www.cngco.com and he will get you what you need. I have bought main and rod bearings from Napa, too.

Standard thrust bearings. Try Valu-Bilt. http://www.valu-bilt.com. Valu-bilt lists their main bearing set at $41.19 in their 2004 catalog for a Cub with the C60 engine. They have a free parts catalog. I would also try the local auto parts store.

Radiators. Pleased with the Irish made radiator for a standard Cub that I purchased from http://www.radiators4tractors.com. Radiator was delivered two days after ordering. Price was right around $130.00 for radiator, gasket and shipping. Radiator fit perfectly, no leaks.

I bought one on ebay, the one "not made in China" (it's made in India) and the fins are noticeably thinner but it fit properly and no problem so far.

Personally, I would take that rad to a quality rad shop. They can do the recores easily and give you a good product.

The rad on Jethro had be redone by a local shop. Even after sitting abandoned in a field for 12 years, the rad is still 110% - no leaks. I don't think the China imports will do that.

Also, ifn you do go to your local rad shop, it may pay off in say a break on repeat business ifn you need to get your gas tank sealed. Rad shops do good gas tank repairs and sealing jobs with Red Kote also. I am some pleased with my tank

I purchased one from YTMag with a new radiator cap that was about $155.00 including shipping. I was rather impressed with the quality of it. Other than the neck being too short for the original radiator cap, (which I knew was bad to start with), I've been right happy with it. Just another option to think about.

Thanks for all the replys. While I have'nt decided which way to go yet I now have plenty to think about. Right now the temp is about 13 deg out and it feels colder without heat in the garage. I thought about using the chainsaw to cut a hole in the back of the house and pulling the cub in. But I was afraid it go through the floor and hurt my cub. Oh well I'll get somthing together and hope for a warm day

Pete has one of the $85 ones that the PO had installed. i had the forsight to grab the old radiator when i picked up the tractor. the old overflow tube was good on it and with a little cutting, fitting and JB Weld, it fits nicely.
I wasn't happy with the flimsy bottom, so i made up plates to cover the holes that don't get reinforced with the side channel supports.

did the original rediators have them?

You did good, originally there were plates over the other holes. 351033R1 one on the front side and one on the rear. Just a metal plate with hole drilled in it.

I, too, had mine recored by a local radiator shop and it fit and is working perfectly. If I was in your shoes, I'd at least take it in and get an estimate.
