45 years ago creosote was pretty common and cheap. Every farmer used to have some on hand before they realized th problems it caused. The boards may have been creosoted when IH received them.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Wood species

Postby allenlook » Wed Jan 12, 2005 8:43 am

Where high strength was called for with some reasonable level of rot and weather resistance, it was common to use white oak. Typical rot-resistant woods (cedar, redwood) can be nice and light, but lacking in the strength and dent-resistance department. They're great for siding or decking, but once you start to beat them up by dropping farm tools and equipment on them and break up the surface fiber's continuity, water will soak into them and split them quick, which seems to weaken a soft wood worse than it will a check or a split in a good piece of oak.

Does anyone have a drawing or the dimensions of the platform?

Thanks
Rick

Ask Ralph. He might have them. He built a beautiful Platform Carrier for his Yaller Cub last year I think it was :!:

As usual, it was an awesome example of his skills :D

Mike:

Sorry, should have though of you, seeing as you started the thread by rebuilding your platform carrier.

Now, ifn only I can find someone who has built or might build a Platform Carrier for a regular Cub. It sure could come in handy.

Platform for...

Postby allenlook » Wed Jan 12, 2005 2:53 pm

I'd like to find a non-Fast-Hitch platform carrier for myself, because it sure would come in handy for hauling around that snow plow that I can't seem to find either! :P

I've finally sold enough Cub windshield wipers on eBay to buy me a snow plow, but I can't find one locally - most of them are selling for $2,000+ with "a free Cub attached."

Just as a thought, GM used yellow pine for the bed floor boards of pick-up trucks until they started making all metal beds. Don't know about the other brands, but I have seen what appeared to yellow pine in the beds of some Ford and International pickups. If the yellow pine was cheaper, I would about bet that's what was used, but thats just a guess.

Paul, I think you may be right about the boards being pine, but these things came around in about 1955 so they're not that old.
