gas cap

Postby mike mix » Sat Jan 08, 2005 7:45 pm

I have a 1953 cub with the factory gas cap. It's a plated cap with a small valve inside to let air in the tank. The cap was leaking so I went to the local case/IH dealer and picked up a new gas cap. This cap has no valve in it to allow air into the tank, it almost looks like a radiator cap. The rubber gasket on the new cap also doesn't like the fuel vapors as the rubber gasket is starting to swell up. I checked the new cap part number and it shows I have the correct cap. Anyone know if the new gas caps have a valve to let air in the tank?

Thanks Mike

You should go to Rudi`s site and look under Navistar Gas Cap. Then print out the form for a free cap.

Definitely. they look like a rattle can top setting on the gastank, but if the surface where it sets is straight they emiminate overflows from gas sloshing or fuel warming up during the day.

Yes they're good. They mean the difference between a long happy life with your cub and going up in flames with it!!!

These "triple baffle" gas caps keep fuel from sloshing over the top of the tank, while allowing air back in so it doesn't vapor lock on you.

Matt,

I couldn't agree more!!! This is a SAFETY issue. Safety issues are usually considered more important than originality. Why should it be important that the cap doesn't stick up higher? All my IH tractors have the safety caps.

I guess saftey is better than originality. I suppose if i ever get her pretty enough to do shows I might put the original one just for show and use the saftey one while using it.

long as we're on the gas cap topic, does anyone know of, or remember a tool to straighten the gas tank cap lips? read someplace that IH dealers had such a tool. My W6 sure could use a bit of TLC in that area.
