Ye-Haw, GIT-HER-DONE!!

Postby danovercash » Wed Dec 29, 2004 2:20 am

Yesterday, 12-27-04 The wife said GIT-HER-DONE, I want a garden this spring. Knowing a great opprotunity(?) when I hear one, I jumped right on it. Have already consulted C&G for parts. Found carb gasket I bought 20 years ago for.98 Picked up Kohler needle and seat (7.00) Borrowed timing light, and went to work. Nearly dead battery, replaced with 800CCA group 1 battery 12-28-04. Last night I had one heck of a time getting old Rip Van Winkle to start. Not enough spark and to much fuel. The hand crank is almost worn out (can the pin be replaced?) Tried to jump with 12V, but got it to spin only once. Finally it fired. when I checked the timing , it had too much advance. Maybe 18 deg I guess. Reset to marks on pulley, runs better now. Points are shot and rotor and cap need replacing. Probably the wires too. Still missing some. 30 years since last tune up except for plugs. What kind of grease and how much goes in the screw holes on side of distributer? Will try to keep everyone posted on what happens with novice tune-up. Also does anyone know if the $16.00(Berryman) carb cleaner from Auto Zone is any better than the $10.00 (Gunk) cleaner from Advance Auto? Hey BigDog Can you please post some Pics for me? I will e-mail to you, TIA, Dan

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Bill, the pictures Dan took are trying to capture the timing marks on a running engine. Not easy to see even in person sometimes. There is not a lot of detail but enough to get the general idea.

Thanks for the help BD, Been out of touch for a couple of days. Another question, are the OEM hand cranks forged, and is mine worn out ? Will send pics. Tia, Also maybe Rudi can use them when he is able on his website. P.S. I was holding the timing light in one hand and the camera in the other, LOL

Dan - here is a link to your pics: http://photobucket.com/albums/v610/dbigdog/Dan%20Overcash%20Pics/

Your hand crank looks well used and worn. You could replace the pin but if it still works why mess with it?

Then I would drive out the old pin and drive in a new one.

I know less than nothing about Hand cranks so I may be all wet on this, but that champhered end could be part of the problem in stead of or as well as the pin. Just a WAG

Bill, the issue is more the worn pin than the bevelled end as far as cranking goes. If you look at the end of the fan pulley you can see how square shoulders on the pins would provide good contact for cranking .

Hand Crank Pin

Postby Eugene » Mon Jan 03, 2005 3:01 pm

Replaced a couple of pins in my Allis hand cranks. One acutally fell out and the other was bent - had been replaced at an earlier time. Found a long grade 8 bolt, with no threads most of the length, slightly larger than the hole. Pressed the bolt into the end of the crank. Cut off head and threads to lenght. Beveled each end of the pin. Tack welded the pin, side closest to handle.

Try to crank the engine with the ignition off - make sure that it doesn't catch- releases easily.

That does not even resemble a Cub crank to me. The way it is beveled on the entry end and from that picture of the end it looks like the pin & shaft are forged as one piece.
Then came Bronson

A friend of mine has 58 with a hand crank. I thought the end was square. The sketch for making one shows a square end also. That is made me make a WAG that it would not hold itself centered and the pins would slip out of the pulley slots. Well AWAG is just that.

I have a original crank and the pin is not as close to the end. Its not square on the end but almost. No where as near rounded of as Dan's
