GAS FLOW

Postby HART » Sun Dec 19, 2004 7:05 pm

BY FAR, MOST OF THE PROBLEMS I SEE POSTED INVOLVE CARB. AND
SLUGGISH GAS FLOW PROBLEMS. TRUE WITH ME ALSO, EVEN THOUGH
HAD COMPLETE ENGINE REBUILD COUPLE YRS. AGO.
SOME POSTINGS MENTION AIR TO TANK AND GAS SUPPLY. HOW
IMPORTANT IS THAT TINY HOLE IN THE GAS CAP ON TOP??? AND
WHAT OTHER SOURCES OF AIR SHOULD BE LOOKED AT?

The hole on the top of the gas cap is very important. It needs to be open. Make sure you are getting good flow from tank to carb by removing hose and letting it run out. Is your sed bowl screen crudded up? Better yet, is the inlet screen on the carb full of crud? How clean is your gas tank?

The hole in the gas cap is very important. Since it is a gravity fed system, in order for the gas to flow out the bottom, air has to get in the top. Other wise, you create low pressure in the tank, and like a vacuum, it holds the gas in the tank. This prevents enough gas getting to the engine.

Its like when you take a glass and put it in the full kitchen sink, fill the glass up and turn it upside down under water. When you pick it up upsidedown, the water stays in the glass until you lift it high enough to let air inside, then it all gushes out.

I check mine for good flow by turning it upside down, and pour a little gas in the cap, It should flow right out the little holes.
