Hot Generator

Postby 9mules » Sat Dec 18, 2004 3:27 pm

Rebuilt my generator and replaced cut-out with regulator and rewired per specs.
Now my ammeter pegs out off the scale (discharge side) & there's not a spark when try to polarize.
Generator got real hot.

Any clues?
Should I had the generator shop match the regulator with generator?

I'll run flow chart tests tomorrow.
Thanks

How many brushes in your Generator? 2 or 3. Need to know in order to help you.
May be somebody smarter than i am can answer with out that. But I cant. Also what wiring diagram did you use?

Battery is pos. ground.
Wiring diagram per FAQS this site, plus Bob Meville's.
3 brush generator.
L wire was the only modification to existing wiring.
I sent that to the 2 post kill/run switch, then jumpered that to the light switch fuse.
The other wire goes to the (-) post on coil.
L wire was the old F wire from generator to light switch.
Thanks

Did you polarize the generator?

It does sound like the generator was trying to charge in the reverse direction. You may have burnt regulator points now. Ground the generator field terminal and then try to polarize the generator. If it charges then, you may have to replace or try to repair the regulator.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Jim, it slipped my mind until after the fact.
This one doesn't give off a spark when I try to polarize. that to me doesn't sound right

I hope I've the right regulator, Jim Becker gave the numbers for my generator (tag is missing) which I inturn gave to NAPA for the regulator.

I'm stumped about the ammeter needle reading off the scale, maxed out discharge.

I'll get on it tomorrow.
Thanks everyone.
