cub engine swap?????

Postby adino1954 » Sun Dec 12, 2004 8:36 am

dad has a 58 cub with a 1pt hitch, howard rotovator ,with that creeper box
on the left final drive
it smokes more out the breather more than out the exhaust with thick oil in the crasnk case.
he has his eye on an engine out of a 184 (red)
is there really more hp out of that engine?
what are the differences?
and is it possible to do the engine swap?
he said the front pulleys are different is this true?
thanks gerard in ct

Gerard, just sit tight and you will get some replies. Geoge Willer is in the process of doing the same swap you are asking about. Steve

Steve,

That project and all others were put on hold when I was hospitalized in early October.

The engine I eventually plan to use is from a 154... it may differ in the flywheel arrangement since , unlike the 184, its' clutch is remote. By swapping flywheels and front pulleys I think everything from the old engine can be bolted up.

I don't know how they did it on the 184, but the 154 had a starter/generator belted to a much larger front pulley.

Yes, the engine has more power because of the higher RPM, compression ratio, and manifold ports.

George , Sorry to see the "cub on steroids " project has been delayed. But I knew that you would have some advice on the topic. Hope everthing is progressing along.and that you will get back out to the shop as soon as possible. The dualed up cub was in the local Christmas parade last week. For some unknown reason that cub sure gets alot of attention with the plow and the duals on LOL. Steve

My cub had a lot of blowby from the breather.i decided to rering it.
i spent about $300 on rings berrings and new valves and guilds
might be easer than a swap.i can get though taller

I think you'll like the 184 engine. Itwill work but there will be some obvice changes that you wil have to swap parts . No buying, unless your parts are bad , Such as clutch, The 184 also has different valves for unleaded gass. Good luck. "Jack"
