when starting my cub

Postby B.L.Hudgins » Sat Dec 11, 2004 2:56 pm

When I try to start my cub sometimes it turns over and sometimes it just makes a sound like EEEERRRRUUUMMMMMMM! It has a new battery and a good ground. The starter was rebuilt about a year ago. Does anyone have any suggestions?

clean and grease all the connections, at the battery terminals, the cable ends and if you have replacement connectors with bolts take them apart and clean and wire bush them to remeove all corrosion. Also clean the connection for the battery ground strap. Grease all connections before you put them back. What size battery and ground cables do you have. I think 2 gauge it about right. You don't say if the battery is fully charged. If your generator is not putting out enough to charge, the battery may be downYou don't say if you have key start or pull rod. Is there water in the battery? Over the plates and almost to the bottom of the filler hole, if it not a perminant battery. Once all these are checked and it still fails at times I would go directly to the starter with a battery jumper cable if it is the selonoide type. Does that cure the problem? If iot is the pull rod type I would remove the switch the rod operates and look it over and check its connnection to the starter. I would use the jumper cable here on the starter terminal and see what happens. Oh make sure the tractor is out of gear when doing these checks. Don't want it to start and run away or run you over.
If thes fail let us know. This is enough for one time. We will still be here if these first steps don't work.

I am getting slow. I see that you joined on my mothers birthday. She was 91 then.

Not sure what you mean by the sound, but if it's like gears grinding take the starter off an clean the oil/grease form the starter drive. Thye should be drive. Oil gets stiff and will cause it to not spin in when cold.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Hey B.L. You sure it doesn't sound like "WEEEEEEEEEEEEUUUMMMMM" ? Good thing it doesn't end with "KEEEEE PLUNK - BOOONNNGGG!!!"

Seriously, I would go with John's suggestion. Also, it's possible you have a few teeth missing or worn on the ring gear on your flywheel. Next time it just spins, try to move the tractor in gear a little to move the position of the flywheel. Could be a worn bendix gear on the starter, too.

Don't know anything about Cubs yet but from the description it sounds like the starter gear isn't engaging in the flywheel teeth. Either not enough juice from the battery or you've got a bad starter.

Who did the starter rebuild?

Could be that the starter was rebuilt wrong.
