Ok Guys,

Thanks to Jim for sending the pictures from TM-parts.

Here is the low-down.

Turn the crank [as if you were trying to start the engine] in a clockwise
direction to where the double punch marks are visible in the
magnito/distributor mounting hole, then continue to turn the crank and count off fifteen (15) valleys [the area between the gear teeth] past the double punch marks that is where the single punch mark will be on the back side of the idler gear. You can also check in the opposite direction, if you like, it would be twenty one (21) valleys in that direction.

Then you can mark the teeth on both sides of that valley.

I checked this with another engine I have torn down.
