Marvel Mystery Oil

Postby Chris Jones » Sat Dec 04, 2004 11:05 am

I know there are additives that can be added to oil to increase cling and help it climb and cover gears. My NAPA guy recommended Marvel Mystery Oil but I didn't think it was that kind of additive. Can you guys recommend anything?

I add a little MMO to every tank of gas. I highly recommend it.

I think the mystery in MMO is oil of wintergreen. This addition causes it to creep into tiny spaces... penetrant.

That's what the smell is...wintergreen..I couldn't place it.

I've been using two oz. to 5 gal. of gas on BD's recommendation, does it keep valves cleaner :?:

About how much should be added with an oils change :?: :?: Sounds like it might get after any weak oil seals

Thanks

Mike :)

An old buddy of mine in the Navy used wintergreen oil to loosen rusted bolts and nuts. Seemed work pretty good if nothing else did the trick.

I use it. It seems to have quieted down the lifters in the C. I put it in the oil and the gas..

Sounds like MMO is a penetrant and wouldn't aid the oil in climbing gears etc. I've seen some demonstration rigs on parts counters before with two hand cranked set of gears inside and the bottom gear in one was in regular oil and the other had the additive and when cranked the one with the additive clung to the gear and transferred itself to the next gear up and then the next easily where the regular oil didn't seem to climb.

I'm thinking of trying something like that in the transmission. Any had any experience in this area?

Lucas Oil

Postby Eugene » Sat Dec 04, 2004 9:12 pm

Local auto parts store has a mechanical display for Lucas Oil. You turn the crank and observe the differences between regular oil and oil with the Lucas product added. The stuff really clings to gears. Their add reads "Stops smoking, knocking, & oil consumption in worn engines". I haven't tried the product so I can't recommend it.

Lucas has a product to be added to manual transmissions - differentials that is supposed to stop leaking seals. I think I am going to give this product a try on my Allis WC. If it works it will save or postpone replacing the seals in the final drive.

There is always STP and Bardahl.

I have seen the stick oil demos. One thing that has puzzled me about that, doen't it make the oil more viscous? And if so, that could be bad on the engine because the oil needs to get into tiny spaces in order to do its job. Maybe it doesn't affect that property, but it looked pretty thich to me.

Good point. Being "sticky" would seem to make it less likely to run into small places and slower to run down guides and troughs to points needing lubrication.

Keep the comments coming.

Lucas is a very good product. I use it to lube bearings when building engines & rearends. We also have used the lucas steering additive. And used the injector cleaner for the diesels. Pup

What (pup) says is true BUT
Thier display with the cranks is a bunch of ???????????????.
Napa store knocked it on the floor & broke it.
The manager is into racing big trip so he had both sides sent to a lab guess what one side had 10whd & the other had 30wnd with almost no
pore viscosity.
When they got thier new display the set it out back in the cold 25deg.
& you could hardley turn the crank on the lucas side.

I have used the product with good results but it makes a person wonder
about thier selling sceam.
If it's been broken I did it.
If its not broken wait till I touch it.

Changing the oil in the '57 hi clear today..First time since I have had it :(..(5 mo.) The drain tube from the filter casing was clogged solid with sludge :x :x and the threaded cap on the drain tube was set so tight I unscrewed the tube from the block. Think this tractor needed an oil change

Anyway, I want to add the MMO to the Low Ash 30 wt. in the crankcase. The tractor has always been run on the IH LA oil. I only have 16 oz. of MMO left in the bottle. Please tell me how much to add to the mix.

Thanks

Mike

I've been doing some looking on additives and came across these links that are interesting.

Maybe the PO had been draining filter housing by unscrewing the tube instead of loosening the cap, or using a rag to mop it out.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
