Here's my current short list of things I know I don't know (about Cubs that is, there's not enough paper in Colorado for the other list).
1. Were the box, top, and front of the battery box all the same guage?
2. For some reason I had never checked the gear oil in the steering box
on one Cub, and when I took out the fill plug, it looks like it had been
filled with a grease gun. Will kerosene work to liquify it, or should
I open it up and clean it out that way? Fortunately the steering works
okay.
3. On my burnt Cub, the oil filter stud is real tight. I don't think pene-
trating oil will help. I'm wondering if I should cut off the bolt head to
get inside, rather than risk breaking it off where it would be real hard
to get to it to remove.
Thanks for the suggestions in advance!!

1- can't help
2- kerosene will probably help, but there is a good possibility the bottom seal is bad and leaking. Reason many have grease rather than 90 wt oil.
3- It was very tight on my burned aprts cub also, but did come out. Remember it's hollow, so once you cut the head off it's going to be hard to grip anyway.

I think the battery box front was the same gauge as the box. The top seems heavier gauge but it may just be the way it's formed.
I agree with John. I'd dis-assemble the unit and clean the grease. I don't think the kerosene would get sloshed around enough to clean out the grease and as he said, you are likely going to have to replace the seal anyway.
Same with the filter bolt.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Steering mechanism
Here is a photo of the grease in my steering mechanism after disassembly. It would take a lot of flushing to remove this amount of grease......Bill V.
