Cub still missing under load

Postby Kirk » Sat Oct 30, 2004 9:07 pm

Well, Ive reset the new points and plugs. Replaced the condensor, plug wires and dist cap and she's still missing under a load. ( purrs like a kitten when just driving around....except when excellerating) .

So I suppose my next step would be replacing the coil?

Is NAPA the best source for the coil? I'm assuming the coil for a mag type system is different than the dist type?

Is there a specific part number I can use?

Thanks guys!!!!!!!!!

Kirk. Last coil I purchased was from "The Brillman Co" in Tatamy, Pa about 4 years ago. Still working good. http://www.brillman.com . I ordered by phone 610-252-9828. Just ask for a coil for a cub J-4 mag. You can price around, I'm sure there are many other suppliers. Hope this helps ..............

Kirk, have you tried adjusting the valves?

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

My wife says I don't listen to her. - - - - - - - - Or something like that!

I adjusted the valves this morning. Actually, only two were just a little snug. Other than that they were OK.

NO CHANGE in performance, though. It still misses heavily under load and upon excelleration.

Also put the mag from my '48 on her. Still NO CHANGE. So I'm ruling out the mag.

What it's doing is "loading up" from the appearance of the plugs. I've even tried different plugs but nothing so far has changed it.....not even a little. It continues to run the exact same way.

I'm going to try setting the points at a different gap tonite. I'll let you know.

Also have an IH carb rebuild kit I purchased from Ron. I was going to wait on that but will start the rebuild if the point "thang" doesn't help.

Kirk,

Excellent!
I had the same problem, so I know what you are talking about. When I swapped carbs it was 100% improvement.

Happy cubbin'.
