Oops, crankshalf Pulley

Postby nenenick » Mon Oct 25, 2004 11:27 am

Hello Everbody, I am in the process of restoring a 1947 cub. I have most of it totally disassembled but have made one mistake in the process which leads me to my question! How do most of you remove the crankshalt pulley without breaking it? I broke mine  , I was using a gear puller and heating the outside casing of the pulley, any thoughts would be appreciated!

Use something like this. You need to pull from the area close to the shaft. The outer edge will break as you found out. And yes heat and wait. Don't rush it.

Crankshaft Pulley

Should at least be big enough for the 4 1/2" OD pulley. You have to be careful because of the potential interference between the bearing separator and the timing pointer on the front engine cover. You will also need a 1/2" -13 hx bolt x 5" long, for the puller to push against. You thread the bolt into the crank hole.

Bill V, here is a picture you posted a while back.

I had to expand on this concept by replacing the center bolt with a small hydralic jack.
Someone else's idea on this board. Walked the pulley right off.

Thanks, Ken. I tried to find that photo, but it wasn't filed where I thought it should be. Guess your filing system is better than mine. Rudi has some of my photos, but they were taken with the front engine cover removed.

Light weight one for a Cub http://www.pulleypuller.com/pp_ltwt.htm I think there is a fellow in Ohio who could make one of these.
