152 Disk Plow?

Postby 9mules » Fri Oct 22, 2004 4:32 pm

I've a chance to buy one, so does anyone have any comments, suggestions etc. about 'em. Pros/Cons compared to the 189/193. What they can or can't do.
I'm using it for a small 1 acre garden and like the compact design.
Got Rudi's manual on it.
Thanks

I have all sorts of disc plows in my collection, Cub, super C, etc......
I have never been able to make any of them work. LOL
I have tried them in sandy ground, rocky ground, clay, silt loam and good old black dirt. They do not work for me but are fun to have in my plow collection.

I have been told they are good in ground with a lot of roots etc.... I like to plow away from trees. :-)

I prefer plowing with a turning plow. We plow "for real" on the farm with a 5 bottom 710 auto reset and buster bar. Nice plow but my favorites are IH number 60 pull types, then the fast hitch Super C plow ( you can adjust the plow any way you want). I also enjoy going to plow days with my Cub with a fast hitch plow. Everyone wants to try it out.

I've have one and don't use it alot. I have plowed a few gardens with it. It works well in stony ground, because the rocks are rolled away from you instead stopping you like with a regular moldboard. I see you are from TN. The plow is probably rather cheap, no more than 200, I would guess. Pick it up and add it to your collection. Every show I bring mine to, I have a least a dozen people stop, look it over, and get alot of questions. Image

Disk plows are great for gardens, and for ground having roots or rocks, but do a lousy job of truning sod. They leave it rough and in piles, sometimes rolling it a full 360 degrees

Thanks men for the input and pic, I've the '48 model, looks about as pretty as yours.
We do alot of "rock" farming here in east TN. (not by choice!). Alot of old rock fences around here so maybe I'll just keep building up on em.
I've 2 complete plows to choose from, both are less then $125.
I wonder about the 360 turn over, maybe a combination of speed of travel and disk depth.
Anyway, got to have 1, that big ol blade looks awesome.
Thanks again.

I've tried aobut every combination of speed, depth, scraper anfle I can think of and still get lousy results with sod. I usually let any sod I have to turn lay a few months and then run the disk over it a time or two and then plow it again. Older model disk plows just didn't do good with sod, whether they were on a cub, C, or H. Once the sod is gone, such as pplowing a garden, etc. they are great. If you have a lot of rock or roots, the rough sod is worth the extra work.

If you can find one (not many around) the 151 rear mounted disc plow worked alot better than the 152.

Disc versus Moldboard

Postby danovercash » Sat Oct 23, 2004 5:41 pm

I have both, and prefer the disc, as I can leave it on and use other implements at the same time. I don't have a coulter for the 193. John is right about sod, trash is also a problem. It's nice to see the dirt roll without looking over your shoulder. See pictures on my site below. (nothing new lately)

Everyone is this area used a disk plow. Cut notches in the disk to stop the draging corn stalks. Image

I have one that is working fine. have been using it on a yard that we have been working on for a family member. It is slow but trying to teach my 15 year old son haw to us it. But doing a good job of turning clumps of grass and broom sage not going to drag a lot of roots and other trash out because it is all turned over. This is in South Carolina red Clay.
