Front Axle Oil Seal, Orientation?

Postby Paul_NJ » Sat Oct 02, 2004 8:40 am

Thanks John *&%@ for your response on lubricating the new seals on the front axle shafts. I forgot to ask my second question. Which way does the seal go? I assume the leather fold goes in (toward the hub) and the open side (with exposed spring) goes outward toward the felt ring. But that is opposite most rubber seals where the open side and spring go toward the oil or grease. So I'm uncertain. The manual says the seal should "point toward the felt washer" - but I don't know what that means. I'd like to be sure cause I's hate to have to pull those expensive replacement seals off.

Thanks

Paul

Paul, it is my understanding that the seal is installed like any other seal with the open side towards the grease. I believe the wording "with the seal pointing toward the felt washer" indicates just that. The seal lip points out towards the felt washer.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

My wife says I don't listen to her. - - - - - - - - Or something like that!

I'm with Bigdog, the open side always goes toward the oil/grease.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!
