oil seal governor c-60 / 154 cub
Not sure if this c-60 governor oil seal is the same as a regular f-cub, but I installed seal 23 / 32 inside, then installed governor, assembly, tightened down the 2-housing bolts, and I just wanted to make sure this looks right to you guys, the seal rides on the governor gear shaft nice, and when I turn engine over by hand , I do not see any issue or conflicts with seal. Does it look right?? I was thinking it would ride a bit further on governor gear shaft. click on picture to enlarge, thanks for the help,Jim

Re: oil seal governor c-60 / 154 cub
The old seal was made different than the new ones, I have wondered as to the depth the book gives , It may need to be set a bit deeper, but just my opinion.

Re: oil seal governor c-60 / 154 cub
Installed correctly. Hard to tell the depth from the photo. Page 1-40, GSS 1411 has a picture measuring the seal's location. The seal is 23/32 inch from the mounting flange and square to the bore.
I see BossHog posted. I would initially set the seat at 23/32 inch. The magneto/distributor driven lugs should clear/not contact the seal.

I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: oil seal governor c-60 / 154 cub
Boss, Hello, and thanks for the help. I was thinking of driving it in deeper, but I removed the governor tonight, and looks like if I do, the back side of the seal , will get close to the idler gear, may cause a issue, I probably could tap it in, just a little , and hope for the best. will I have to remove governor, and then tap the seal in,or can I leave the governor in place and tap the seal in?? thanks Jim

Re: oil seal governor c-60 / 154 cub
Eugene, the gov lug just clears the oil seal lip, maybe by a 1/8 inch or so, the picture makes the seal and lug look closer. but I have about 1/8 inch, so when I mate the distributor gear into the governor lug, it should not interfere with seal....I hope! Thanks,Jim

I know that the NAPA seal that we installed at Todd's this past weekend needs to be set deeper than the original manual calls for. We went at least an 1/8th deeper. Set per the factory manual, the lip rides right almost at the notches in the shaft!!!

Mike , I have the governor installed , should I remove governor, and drive seal in a little, or try drive seal in, with governor in place, not sure if that would hurt the seal or not, thanks,Jim

Jim:
This is a good reason why getting Earl's Governor Seal Insertion Tool is a good idea. Takes the guesswork out of setting the IH seal.
I know this may not help much at the moment...
For me it was a really good investment and I have only done 1 seal so far. But it is going to make the next two really easy

I used the tool once and still had a small leak, I had to remove the distributor and go in a little deeper. I marked a large socket with the depth after that and I use it from now on. If you have the governor removed you can see just how far you can go in without passing through near the gears.

Re: oil seal governor c-60 / 154 cub
Rudi, and Yogi, thanks for the tips. I will have to drive the seal in a little deeper. the tool I use, is a broken governor from a aliis B tractor, fits the seal just perfect, , and when I get it to the depth , that will work good, Ill mark the shaft on the allis b governor, and should be good for next time. That tool that Earl makes is first class, with today's seals, You almost need a tool /driver made with adjustments, so a guy can dial in " what works" I find that anything from o-rings to seals to bearings, come with a wide range of "perfect fit" thanks again,Jim

Re: oil seal governor c-60 / 154 cub
That is what I was getting at in my post, Rudi.... Todd made a wooden tool that we used and marked at the proper depth based on the manual (21/32, if I recall correctly)... When set at that depth and tried with the governor held in place for depth, it was NOT deep enough...I think that the "lip-to-face" ratio is smaller than on the original seal...

That may have been my problem Mike. I had to go on in at least 1/16 of an inch more.
The depth the tool set it in was right on the edge of the taper, I could plainly see it needed to go a little deeper..

Mike:
I would be interested to see a side by side comparison of the IH and the NAPA seal. That may be where the difference is as you suggest.

Re: oil seal governor c-60 / 154 cub
Many of the IH seals I have received have been National seals in IH boxes. It might not be so much the difference in IH versus NAPA as the difference in seals made 40 years ago (When the manuals were written) versus seals made a year or 6 months ago.Rudi wrote:Mike:
