Axle drag torque

Postby EZ » Wed Sep 15, 2004 6:31 am

Hmmmm...........while re-assembling my left final drive axle, I found that I was too tight on the drag torque. I had about 45-50 in. lbs. so.........I ordered a couple shims. There was what looks like a .030 in there already, I had enough play in it I figured it would take another .030.........my dealer shipped me 2 shims, both .015. I put them both in but was only able to get about 8 in. lbs. so..........I took one out and now the best I can get is 25-27 in. lbs. My manual calls for 10-20 in lbs.
I can get it to 19in lbs. but it leaves the bull gear "just loose". By tightening one more "castle" on the big nut is where I'm at 25in lbs. The bull gear is now snug, and the drag does not really feel too tight.

I'm thinking that on the old bearings, races etc, a little snug won't hurt.
Anybody got any experience in this area?

EZ - I think you will be OK. It'll loosen up some after it runs in anyway.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Biggy,
Yeah, I think you are right.
Never been in this deep before.
Sure is a great learning experience for us shade-tree guys.

Thanks.
