Cub 22 sickle bar mower vibration

Postby Eugene » Mon Sep 06, 2004 8:25 pm

How much vibration should the 22 sickle bar mower have? Bought the tractor with mower. Used the mower for the first time yesterday. The mower shakes the whole tractor. I have the instructions for setting the register which I have not yet done.

Looking for someone who mowes with the mower and their opinion.

Pulley...

Postby allenlook » Mon Sep 06, 2004 8:38 pm

I'm assuming you have the sickle-bar's pulley mounted instead of the bigger 6.75" for the belly mower - as the larger pulley would overspeed the mower and cause lots of shaking.

Eugene,

Are you using the smaller pulley on the PTO? If not it runs too fast and
will shake, rattle, and roll you off the tractor. I can measure tomorrow,
unless someone else gives the exact diameter. I think it is about 4 - 4 1/2
inches. It may still shake a little but the smaller pulley will certainly
reduce. Hope this helps.

Enjoy that little sicklebar!!

4 something

Mine is 4-something... I'm not sure if you measure the outer circumference of the pulley, or the circumference in the groove.

Don't know what rpm's you're running but try 1/2 to 2/3 throttle speed. That pitman arm system will vibrate at high rpms.

sickle bar mower

Postby Eugene » Mon Sep 06, 2004 8:50 pm

Thanks for the fast response.

This is a belly mounted mower. The drive pulley (pto) is approximately 8 or 9 inches. I'll check tomorrow.

Thanks again.

Belly?

Postby allenlook » Mon Sep 06, 2004 8:54 pm

If by belly-mounted you mean that the sickle bar protrudes from the center of the tractor as opposed to from the rear of the tractor, then the pulley should be about 4" in diameter. That is standard for the C-22, and a larger pulley, especially 7-9" will definitely overspeed the mower.

Sorry for being unclear, when I said "belly mower", I meant something like a mower deck, like the Woods C59 or L59, as in the modern style lawn tractors.

The C22 should have a 4 - 4 1/2" pulley on the pto shaft driving a 10 - 12" pulley on the mower. If you have the larger pulley on the pto it is for a rotary mower and will definitely run the sickle mower too fast.

If you over speed it it will shake very bad.
BUT even with
all the right pulleys it will still shake to beet the band.
Just look at the pitman & see how much weight you are changing the direction of even at low speed & how rough & fast it has to change.
If it's been broken I did it.
If its not broken wait till I touch it.

Cub 22 sickle bar mower vibration

Postby Eugene » Tue Sep 07, 2004 11:08 am

Checked the photos in tm-tractor.com. Took another look at the mower setup. The mounting bracket holding the mower to the torque tube has been repaired and does not have a cross brace. That would account for a good portion of the vibration.

Thanks for the input.

Be sure the tapered bolts holding the mounting bracket to the torque tube are tight.

In the past, the tapered bolts holding the mower to the torque tube were always working loose due to vibration of the mower. I now use a bit of locktite on each bolt when I install the sickle mower and no longer have to stop to tighten the bolts. Dan

I have spent the best part of the last month rebuilding my sickle bar mower and have got this puppie sounding like a sewing machine. I still have to do work on the drivetrain assembly but I made a huge difference by disassembling the cutter bar and rebuilding with new parts. I carefully setup the new bar assembly with new wear plates and paid special attention to clearances and it paid off. I hope that when I redo the driveshaft assembly that I will realize further improvements. I would be happy to help in any way if you have any specific questions. A couple of key points,
1. Slow down, I run my throttle at about 1/3 in most cases.
2. Adjust your shoe soles so the cutting blade rides on the soles alone, which is about 1 1/2" off of the ground.
3. Adjust the lead of the cutter bar as described in the manual on Rudi's site.
4. Pay attention to the little things, I had on knife clip that was to tight to the cutter bar and readjusted it. The difference was dramatic.
5. Lubrication, I do it after every couple of hours with plain oil. I don't think that you can overlubricate.

Hope that I helped, Bob Roraback

Cub 22 sickle bar mower vibration

Postby Eugene » Wed Sep 08, 2004 12:13 am

Whoops, no tapered bolts holding the mower to the torque tube - 5/8 all thread. While mowing I tightened the all thread twice.

Again thanks for the help.
