Normally you need to drill a pilot hole to get the saw blade in to start a hole like that. IH recognized the need to chop holes in the hood and provided the pilot holes.

The sad thing is that considering the number of times the generator got oiled anyway, it would have been less work to remove the hood each time than to chop the hole into it.

Hey I'm jealous, my 55 don't even have holes. Looks like a good use for my plasma torch.......just kidding!

Well, cutting the hood is easy, getting the cuts that crooked is the hard part.

I ran out as soon as I saw the picture and bought the hinges for my new "hood door", but I can't find that handle anywhere!

Do you suppose they would have it at NAPA?

I have it on good authority that those handles are still available NOS from ScrapBucket Tractor Supply. But it is a special order item.

That' appears to be custom made hold down, I can make you one for $20.

This goes to show once again the biggest design flaw on the cub was the once piece hood and gas tank. It was cheaper to make (though I still wonder how much more it would have taken for four more little strips of metal and 4-1" cap screws) but doing anything to the engine is a real pain.

Still, I never wanted to chop up my Cub like this! Plus, the Cub engine on my combine has no generator!

Why mess with some substitute part when you can get NOS? Part number is 512290R1. It's discontinued but the Parts Depot still has some.

Note the key technique on cutting the panel. You cut the top and both sides, then bend it out before you make the bottom cut. Otherwise you don't get the ski jump at the bottom.

You must be referring to an earlier version of the parts list, if you refer to the latest parts diagram, in TC-37G, you'll note that the "bend" at the bottom of the hood door is actually a "deflection flare", designed to keep rainwater and wayward manure from getting into the otherwise precision kerfs in the hood panel...

This was an option not available on all models of the earlier Cubs, but was made standard sometime after 1957 on all models.

I think I am going to have to put my rubber boots on before I read anymore of this thread.
