Farmall Cub

I'd like to know if anyone has experience (positive or negative) making an oil pan gasket from the black RTV? I've been told that if you degrease the surfaces real well you can get a good seal. Also, how about for the the valve cover? I'm finally ready to put this Cub back together and I'm trying to make as many gaskets as possible.

Is it tough for you to get the proper gasket? They are not expensive. One thing to do is to make sure the rim of the oil pan is nice and flat before you install it. I would get the cork gasket from IH. If you don't over tighten it and the pan is flat, it will not leak.

Do yourself a real big favour. Buy the real gaskets from CaseIH. You won't regret it. What you do now will determine what you do over again shortly

I guess it depend how much rubber you want floating in your oil pan! RTV is a rubber, oil breaks down rubber. Not really what you want in your oil pan.

It has been my experience with RTV silicone that it does not last very long when in contact with petroleum products.. I would use it as a temporary fix at best.

OK, I guess that means it vulcanizes at room temperature BUT how high of a temperature can it withstand before it starts to devulcanize.

Most of the RTV products I've used are good to 400 F. Some are good to 650F and above. I'e used RTV alot and it works well. I prefer Gaskets when I can get them but so many manufacturers are using sealants instead of gaskets these days.
I've never had a problem with RTV breaking down from contact with oil. But contact with fuel or gasoline is a recipe for disaster.
But in this case I would use the gasket with alittle weatherstrip cement or spry adhesive to stick it to the block and a very thin coating of grease on the gasket before i put the oil pan on.
