Stopped to look at the potato harvesters today. The smaller one was made by ????? potato manufacturing co. The larger one was indeed a IHC exactly like the one in the previous photos. The front wheels have been removed and a hitch had been crudely fabricated. The owner wasn't home but talked with his granddaughter and said that they haven't been used in years. I'll have to check back later to see if he's interested in dealing.

I have a Massey-Harris #1 digger and I had the front truck as well. Like an idiot, I thought that the truck was a waste of my time.. now I am kicking me butt. I haven't found an IH one yet, but I am looking. IF it has the front truck I will keep it that way.

Most of these diggers that a Cub can haul safely were originally Horse Drawn diggers, and they work nicely both with the original trucks intact or even with the front trucks removed. I would never dream of selling my digger, and I have had some pretty serious offers. I paid almost $300.00Cdn for mine and it was a good deal, and so far I have refused $500.00Cdn.

THey are getting harder to find, but when you find em, grabem .. there are a lot of fun. Potatoes are one of the easiest crops to grow and it is a staple. The amount of potatoes you can harvest out of an acre garden is higher than most other products and they keep well over the winter especially in a cold room or root cellar.

The Massey-Harris diggermanual is availabe for those who want it, and it will be on the server soon. I also have manuals for a couple of IH Diggers, but not the 5A unfortunately. I am hoping to acquire one at some point.

Oh, this type of tater digger makes a good rock picker and should you tow a trailer behind it to collect the rock harvest making it easier to utilize the rocks as rip-rap or other landscape uses

That is a great video! Love to see the old equipment running like that.

Finally found someone home. That's as far as the good news goes. The owner hasn't planted potatoes for twenty years and I guess this is the year he's going to plant. Very nice people to talk with though. I left my name and phone number with them and asked that if they ever do want to sell to give me a call. Just a little disappointed. Oh well on to the next project!!!

Keep ya spirits up Papermaker. Trust me, I've talked to quite a few of the ol'farmers that had stuff that they had no interest in until I told them I was interested in it. Then all of a sudden the junk thats been out in the weather for years becomes a valuble piece of antique equipment.

This brings back memories of my childhood. Granddad always had several rows of potatoes on one side of one of the tobacco patches. He used an old horse drawn potato digger behind the tractor, but he never would let us ride on the seat! (Probably a wise move on his part.) We did get to pick up the potatoes and pile them on the wagon pulled by another tractor. Sorry to say, both tractors were Olivers, and the potato digger was much smaller, no front wheels and not much behind the back wheels.

Now that is COOL!
